RICHARD SHELLY LYNN 5120 FAUST AVENUE LAKEWOOD,CALIFORNIA 90713-1924 562-867-8412 | I am Richard Shelly Lynn, Senior. One of my sons, Michael Dean Lynn, is becoming fascinated with the idea of tracing back through those ancestors with the surname Lynn, as far back as he can go.We already have some research performed by Nadine Clark and Michael is interested in extending it. It seems that our branch of Lynns lived in Alabama and Georgia. We have learned that a lot of people like to think that they have an American Indian ancestor, usually Cherokee. This has been characterized as mythical by one commentator on "white" American thinking. He notes that the Indian ancestry is almost always ascribed as Cherokee, and not Apache, Huron, etc.In fact, there is a rumor from both of my parents that there is "some Cherokee" in my ancestry, even though my parents came from different parts of the country. No one can specify any particular Cherokee ancestor, and I am inclined to agree with the critic that it is mythical. One amateur genealogist on my mother's side even hints that it may have been a "Cherokee princess."Sounds pretty romantic, doesn't it? Has anyone done research that demythologizes the notion of Cherokee ancestry? How common in fact is Cherokee ancestry in white families.Conversely, how common is the notion that there is Cherokee ancestry in a white family, but no genealogical evidence? |
