ANCY ANNE MABE:
FORMER WEST POINT LADY DIES IN CALIFORNIA

Mrs. Nancy Whitaker formerly a resident of this community residing south
of town, died at the home of her daughter in San Diego Calif. On Thursday Nov
22 ,1928.
Death came as a result of a shock caused by the fracture of one of her limbs
and arm. She had attained the age of 85 years and one month.

Her body was shipped to West Point and funeral services were held at
Grace Lutheran Church Tuesday afternoon, Rev.. W A Klink officiating,
Interment was made in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Nancy Anne Whitaker, nee Mabe was born in Tennessee on the 23th of Oct 1843.
While still a young child she, with her parents, moved to Illinois. Here she
grew to womanhood. On the 23 of December 1862 she was united in marriage to
William Whitaker. The couple went into housekeeping at Danville Vermilion Co., Ill. and
resided there until the fall of 1883, when they came to Nebraska, locating
in Hooper, but have always called West Point their home. Mr. Whitaker
passed away December 23, 1911. Since this time Mrs. Whitaker has been making
her home with one of her children.

The union was blessed with eight children:
six surviving her, namely: Lilly Sigman, Sarah Sawtelle, and Mrs. Etta
Steele of San Diego Calif. , A.N. Whitaker,Vivian S D , M. B Whitaker of
Fullerton, Nance Co., Nebraska.
F M Whitaker of Palmer Nebraska besides the children she is survived by
thirty-six grandchildren and thirty three great grandchildren

Out-of-town relatives and friends who attended the funeral here Tuesday
were her three sons named above, a son-in-law, Mr. Lewis, of Fremont and Mrs.
Harry Dill of St Edward's Nebraska.

NOTE:
This newspaper spelled Whitaker " Whiteker"
This is a newspaper clipping from 1928. I guess from West Point, Cuming Co. Ne or
nearby newspaper.

The IL FED CENSUS for 1880 lists the William Whitaker family living in Compromise Twp., Champaign Co. IL the next county west of Vermilion Co., IL.
The NE FED CENSUS for 1900 says Nancy had 10 children; 8 lived.
Her sons were: Alexander Nelson, Michiel B, William (Will or Willie), Frank Marshall
Daughters were: Lillia May, Sarah Catherine (Kate/Katy), Etta Belle, Iva Alice

Mr Lewis was Iva Alice's husband. She died in Fremont, Dodge Co., NE in August, 1912.
They had 2 daughters, 1 son. I think he remarried. Have been unable to find any info for this family. She is buried in Fremont. The funeral was held at the Congregational Church.

My line comes through Frank Marshall and Emma Kate (Krug) Whitaker.

Nancy died in California staying with a daughter of hers (Lily). She fell in a doorway and
broke one arm and one leg and was put into a hospital. The death certificate says died
of Phonina. in lungs. Janet talked with a medical doctor about this and he said, "With
two broken bones like that, she no doubt died of a blood clot from the breaks in the bones. They hit her lungs and killed her." She died just 2 days after she broke the bones."

Carol's Thought on Why Nancy died: I have seen her pictures taken through the
years, and I can well imagine how a terribly heavy-set woman could die from bone breaks.

Nancy and her parents and siblings moved to IL when she was a small child, obit says.
Her sister, Jane, married Aaron Conger in ?(don't have data near-by)-anyway they were living in Champaign Co at the same time and both families came to NE in the same year of 1883.
I identified a picture I have Burzilla Francis Conger taken at Wayne, NE in 1895. She was the daughter of Jane Mabe Conger. There is a website on Rootsweb for the Conger family. Perhaps, this person has been in touch with you?
Jane died in 1888 in Cherry Co., NE

A letter written by Nancy (Mabe) Whitaker to her children after the house fire was found

Carol's Note--I wonder if she may have also been burned in the house fire or had smoke inhalation. They probably were still using kerosene lamps in 1924. I don't know how the fire started.

I do know when Grand-Uncle Willie was younger, a horse kicked him in the head and part of his memory was destroyed. That is probably why he never was married and why he stayed home with his mother.

This is what my cousin, Janet Whitaker in Canton, OH had to say about this incident.

"I did not know that Nancy Mabe's house burned. I did know that Uncle Willie had a fire in the pig pen and he was badly burned trying to save the pigs and died about a week later.

Bert and Margaret (son of Frank M Whtaker & wife from Fullerton, NE) told me, that
they went to see him in a Grand Island, NE hospital and the next day, the shock of the burns had turned his hair white overnight. I never knew that could happen, but they said he had white hair the next day." My mother told me the same thing.
