Fort Chiswell Mansion. Built in 1839 by Stephen and Joseph Cloyd McGavock. 300,00 bricks made by Lorain Thorne and James Johnson. Several owners after McGavock: John Garnett Davis, John Mack Dickey and William T. Berry in the 1920s (Davis and Berry were brother in laws of Dickey). In the 1930s it was acquired by George L. Carter and in the 1940s by Mr. and Mrs. John R. Mabe. In the 1980s is was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Brown.

John William Manuel
John William "Bill" Manuel, 82, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at Asbury Center at Birdmont.


Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 25, at 1 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery.


He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #82 and a member of the Wytheville Golf Club.


He is survived by his wife, Frances Manuel of Wytheville, Va.; two daughters, Shirley Turri of Portsmouth, Va., and Linda Farley of Columbia, S.C.; one son, John W. "Johnny" Manuel of Columbia, S.C.; a stepson, Wayne J. Weatherman of Greensboro, N.C.; three sisters, Byrd M. Bourne, Mary Lou M. Clemons and Georgia M. Gillman, all of Wytheville, Va.; three brothers, Jesse Manuel of Wytheville, Va., Charles H. "Buddy" Manuel of Beaufort, S.C., and Lawrence S. Manuel of Wytheville, Va.; seven grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and four great-stepgrandchildren.


Gillman Funeral Chapel in Wytheville, Va., is in charge of the arrangements.
