Notes for C
HARLES MILLER MABE:

The 1920 Carroll County, Virginia census:
Mabe, Charlie M. (27), Lennis B. (24), Gearld M (1 yr 6 mos.)

Her mother, Margaret Mabe Gilley had taken her to Hillsville for a family visit and she met her cousin Charles Mabe. According to ‘Belle’ “It was love at first sight.” She saw him only twice before they married.

‘Charlie’ as he was called, was in World War I, and evidently left shortly after their marriage. Their first son, Pete Miller Mabe was born while Charlie was in Germany. When Charlie came home he ask what the child’s name was, Belle said “Gerald”. Charlie said nope and called him Pete the rest of his life.

After Charlie returned from the War, two more children were born in Hillsville, VA. Both o fthese children died and are buried at Hillsville in the Mabe Cemetery. They share a stone at Mabe cemetery in Hillsville.

Charlie and Belle then moved to Helphill, WC and Charlie worked in the coal mines. Another son, Lee Ollen Mabe was born there on Jan 3, 1926.

Charlie left the mines and came to Washington County,VA in the early 1930’s. He and Belle lived in a small house on Martha Gilley McNew’s property. Martha was Belle’s twin sister. During the Roosevelt presidency World War I veterans were given money after a ‘March on Washington’. Charlie used the money to buy land in PoorValley and built a home there for his family. The deed is dated 1937 in Washington County, VA. During this time he worked for other farmers and did carpenter work. He built a barn for Fullen Henderson still standing today 2002, in excellent shape. During the 2nd World War he went to Radford, VA to work in a defense plant. He came back to Poor Valley and went to work for Olin Mattison and continued there until his death.

He was a much loved and admired man in the Saltville area of Virginia. He was a very giving and generous man and Belle always had the best and newest of everything.

He died from a heart attack on his way to work on Jan 12, 1959. He is buried at ElizabethCemetery. The Pallbearers were theSaltville Post American Legion.
