ILLY GENE MABE:

Billy Gene (Bill) Mabe, Nixa, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2005, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born April 18, 1931, in Highlandville, one of 13 children of Donald Lester Mabe and Hazel Viva (Warren) Mabe. He and Joyce Jean Maples were married on June 30, 1950.

Bill grew up singing gospel music and sang with members of his family at many funerals. While living in Wichita, Kansas, in the early 1950's, Bill and Joyce were active leaders in the Indian Southern Baptist Church where Bill taught youth while Joyce taught the little ones.

Later, Bill was the song leader at the Riverdale Baptist Church south of Nixa for 30 years. He would often return from road shows in the early morning hours on Sunday, but would still be at his appointed place when it was time for the service to begin. For the last several years, he was an active member of the Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Springfield, attending his Faith Family and worship services regularly even during his last weeks of life when he was ill.

He was in the process of reading through the Bible this year.

Bill was a pioneer in the Branson entertainment business where he and three of his brothers founded the Baldknobbers Show in 1959. Bill played the Dobro and steel guitar, sung high tenor harmony and served as the perfect "straight man" for Droppy's comedy antics.

He was also the producer of the show, and was known for his excellent ear for music, being able to hear what was right or notes that were missed with uncanny accuracy.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce, of the home; three children, Debbie Bilyeu and her husband, Hosca, Brookline, Dennis Mabe and his wife, Renee, Ozark, and Darla Linebaugh and her husband, Richard, Nixa; nine grandchildren, Joy Bilyeu-Steele, Robin Rees, Will Bilyeu, John Bilyeu, Tifini Roberts, Garrett Mabe, Denton Mabe, Justin Linebaugh and Jordan Linebaugh; six great-grandchildren; six brothers and sisters and their spouses, Marie and Wilbur Blansit, Nixa, Bob and Sue Mabe, Branson, Cletus and Maebelle Mabe, Wichita, Kansas, Lyle Mabe, Springfield, Joan and Tommy Bilyeu, Ozark, and Sharon and Gary Michel, Nixa; three sisters-in-law, Katie, Lois and Barbara; many nieces and nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers and sisters, Don Mabe Jr., Connie Sue Mabe, Pauline McCafferty, Max Mabe, Nancy Carter and Jim Mabe.

Funeral services were 2:00 p.m., April 24, in Ridgecrest Baptist Church , 2210 West Republic Road, Springfield with Pastors Hosea and Tommy Bilyeu officiating. Burial followed in McConnell Cemetery.
