Descendants of Robert Mabe, Jr

Generation No. 1

1. ROBERT3 MABE, JR (ROBERT2, WILLIAM1) was born Bet. 1770 - 1775 in North Carolina, and died Abt. 1829 in Stokes County, North Carolina. He married POLLY UNKNOWN. She was born Abt. 1780, and died Bef. 1841 in Wythe County, Virginia.

Notes for R
OBERT MABE, JR:
Robert, Jr. is listed in the Stokes County, North Carolina 1810 census:
3001-20010
Translation:
Males: 3 (under 10), 1 (26 to 45)
Females: 2 (under 10), 1 (26 to 45)

Robert, Jr is listed in the Stokes County, North Carolina 1820 census:
32001-1201
Males : 3 (under 10), 2 (10 to 16), 1 over 45
Females: 1 (under 10), 2 (10 to 16), 1 (26 to 45)

After the 1820 census Robert is not listed.

Notes for P
OLLY UNKNOWN:
Polly was in the Stokes County, North Carolina 1830 Census:
22101-2000111
Translation:
Males: 2 (under 5), 2 (5 to 10), 1 (10 to 15), 1 (20 to 30)
Females: 2 (under 5), 1 (20 to 30), 1 (30 to 40), 1 (40 to 50)

The children's ages coincides with the ones listed for Robert, Jr in the 1820 census.

I think that Arnold was married and living with his mother. One of the males under 5 might be his son Washington and the female 30 to 40 might be his wife.

There is a possibility that Catherine, a son, and daughter were living with Polly in 1830. Refer to More About Elias Ratliff.

After 1830 I think Polly moved her family to Wythe County, Virginia.

The following is an analysis of the Robert Mabe family organization as provided by Mary Jo:

The family I have so far for Robert and Polly are as follows....not taking
into consideration the early census records.

1- Catherine
2- Arnold
3- Washington
4- Alexander
5- William
6- Stephen
7- John
8- Larkin

I feel the 1810 and 1820 census provide the numbers needed to put this line together. 1830 has too many possibilities with kids and grandkids mixed in.

1810 shows 5 children which match the ages of the ones above:
Arnold, Washington and son A
Catherine and daughter B

1820 shows 8 children, and it looks to me like one died
Arnold, Washington, son A appears to have died;
Adding Alexander, William and Stephen
Catherine, daughter B
Adding daughter C

1830
Adding John and Larkin (ages 5-9)
This give me 8 sons with one unknown/dead, 3 daughters with two unknown/unaccounted for.

It's tough to figure out who else is living with Mother Polly. The 16-20 year old could be William, Alexander or Stephen among other possibilities (i.e grandson) given we have several who married after the fact. I believe you are correct that Catherine is living there with a son and daughter (ages 0-4). The others remain a mystery to me at this time; I'm not inclined to assume marriages we have no record of. The 20-29 could be Arnold (age 20-29) and his wife Elizabeth (age 30-39), and the remaining boy and girl (ages 0-4) could be two younger children of Robert and Polly or other grandchildren.

EMAIL from Lena Hopkins - Mary night be an Arnold.

I think Mary the wife of Robert is an Arnold and probably came to Wythe Co.
after Robert died to be near her Arnold family as I have them in my
Armbrister family and they are from Stokes and Surry NC. - Lena Hopkins

Hi guys,
Got a contact from a gentleman researching Pulaski County Mabes - he
indicated being related to William McNeill Mabe (son of Robert F, gson of
William and Prudence, ggson of Robert Jr.). He said he had some notes made
by William McNeill Mabes daughter-in-law, Reba Hughes Mabe, wife of Miles
Garland, stating that Robert Jr's wife was Mary Courtney. Have either of
you heard any suggestion of Mary's maiden name? This man (Steven Cole)
also indicated that Robert Jr.'s full name was Robert Lee Mabe, Jr. - how
about this piece of information? I'd love to know his source other than
"notes".

Steven Cole wrote back. He said that the information about Robert Jr's
full name and his wife's maiden name is not sourced. His mother-in-law has
been dead for ten years and before she died, she wrote down everything she
could remember and what she remembered other people saying. I don't know
how we would ever go about verifying this information but we can at least
file it away in that folder labelled "PROVE IT".
