Descendants of Robert Mabe, Jr

Generation No. 2

2. CATHERINE4 MABE (ROBERT3, ROBERT2, WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1804 in Assumed NC, and died Bet. 1854 - 1860 in Assumed Wythe County, Virginia. She met (1) JESSE LAWSON, son of MOSES LAWSON and ELIZABETH BRADLEY. He was born Abt. 1794. She married (2) ELIAS RATLIFF January 01, 1833 in Wythe County, Virginia. He was born Abt. 1806.

Notes for C
ATHERINE MABE:
The only proof I have that Catherine is Robert and Mary's daughter is that she was married in Wythe County about the time Mary moved to Wythe County.

Jim Mabe

Notes for Jesse Lawson:
Darrell Mabe went to Raleigh, NC a couple of weeks ago in search for Bastardly Bonds - a case filed in 3/10/1829 by Catherine Mabe against Jesse Lawson. She said that he was the father of her child. He and John Lawson posted a $100 bond. Could this child be Jesse Mabe? Note the same first name. - Jim Mabe

There was another bond filed against Jesse Lawson in March, 1834. We know
that Catherine had moved to Virginia and had married Elias before 1834. I
don't know which child this one was for. Maybe, Giles? Maybe related to the former Bond above?

This bond reads:

State of North Carolina
Stokes County

KNOW all men by these presents, That we Jesse Lawson and Alexander Mabe and Elijah Nelson all of the County and State aforesaid, are held and firmly bound unto David S ------ governor of The State of North Carolina for the time being and his successors in office as aforesaid in the sum of two hundred dollars current money of the State aforesaid; to which payment well and truely to be made, we bind ourselves, our heirs, jointly and severally, firmly by theses presents, Sealed with our seals and dated the 12th day of March
Anno Domini, 1834

THE CONDITION of the above Obligation is such, that whereas a certain Jesse
Lawson is charged with having a certain illegitimate child, begotten on the body of Catherine Mabe. Now if the said Jesse Lawson, his heirs, executors shall provide for the support and maintenance of the said child to the indemnification of the parish of Stokes and the County aforesaid; and shall perform such order as the Court shall from time to time make in the premises, then this Obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.

Executed in open Court
(signed by Jesse Lawson, Alexander Mabe, and Elisha Nelson)

Notes for E
LIAS RATLIFF:

I visited the Dallas Library on my lunch hour and re-found the "Lost Children
of Wythe County book. I found the rest of the references to Elias Ratliff's
children:
Apr, 1840:
Jessy 12, Eliza 13, Mary 11
Sep 16, 1840:
Mary 8, Plesent 7
Mar 25, 1841:
Eliza 12, Jessy 12, Mary 9
Mar 4, 1842:
Eliza 14, Jessy 13, Mary 10, Plesent 9
Mar 19, 1843:
Jessy G, 13, Mary M, 12, Giles P, 10, Martha J, 8
Aug 5, 1850
Martha J. 13, Susannah E. 12, Matilda D. 10, Frances 8, Mariah K. 7

Mar 3, 1861 Elias Ratliff, father of John R., age 16 on Jan 18, 1861, bound to
Isaac N. Reece, until age 21 to learn the trade of a blacksmith and to have a
full set of blacksmith tools, a new suit of clothes, and 6 months of schooling.

This info confirms that Giles middle name is Pleasent. Also Eliza is his
daughter not a future wife. And the ages of all the children in the 1850
census are suspect.

Charting and calculating ages, probable surnames:

Susanna E. 12/1838

John's age in 1861 makes him born in 1845

Well, this certainly proves that father's can never be depended upon to give the correct ages of their children, at least the names match (refer to 1850 census below!!! This does show that we have some kids born before Elias and Catherine Mabe were married (Jan 1, 1833). Now how do we prove which of those born before 1833 were Mabes (assuming that Catherine bore them out of wedlock or was previously married to a Mabe) and which one's were, if any, Ratliff's (perhaps his from a former marriage)? Giles Pleasant is too unique a name (I hope), not to be the one and only Giles Pleasant Mabe, who died in the Civil War. I think it's safe to assume that Martha and her younger siblings are in fact Ratliff's.
---Mary Jo Loyd

I think the children more than likely are Catherine's. There are 1 boy and two
girls under 5 in Polly's 1830 census that are unaccounted and I did not see an Elias Ratliff in the Wythe 1830 census.
---Jim Mabe

Without any evidence and knowing that Giles has been seen as a Mabe, I am treating the other 3 older children as Mabes and entering them as stepchildren of Elias.

1840 Wythe Co. Census
Silas Racliff 02001-41101
Silas is probably Elias
Adult male age 30-39 (born between 1801-1810) Elias
Adult female age 20-29 (born between 1811-1820) Catherine
Boy age 10-14 (born between 1826-1830)
2 boys age 5-9 (born between 1831-1835)
1 girl age 5-9 (born between 1831-1835)
4 girls age 0-4 (born between 1836-1840)

Too many kids here to figure out - Mabe overload kicking in!!!!!!!

1850 Wythe Co Census 68th District 246/315/315:
Ages of children are all wrong based on above.

Wife and mother Catherine is missing. We had assumed she died before 1850, but she was found to be alive in 1854 when she reported the death of her son Jesse Mabe. Assuming she was merely omitted from this census or perhaps not living there or out of town.

1860 Wythe Co Census 68th District 914/1456/1292:
Now we seem to have all new kids and if Catherine Mabe died prior to 1850, then these children have another mother, and it appears that Susan may be the one.
