Notes for J
OHN BOBIER:
The following entry was listed in the Lambton County (Ontario, Canada) 1880 Atlas/History:

JOHN BOBIER, of Florence, is a gentleman who has secured a creditable pecuniary position, as well as an enviable reputation as a man and a citizen, by his own unaided efforts.
Arriving from Ireland (where he was born in the County Wexford in 1804) in a condition of extreme poverty, he was obliged to travel on foot with his father's family from the City of New York to Canada, where, after their arrival, they located near Port Talbot, in Elgin Co. There the subject of this sketch attained his majority, after which he removed to that portion of the Township of Euphemia since set off as the Township of Zone, where settlers were few and far between in that region, and the present site of Florence was a wilderness. In his new location Mr. Bobier commenced the life of a pioneer, and successfully coped with the freaks of fortune through a long period of privations.
Desiring greater latitude for farming operations, he removed to Kansas soon after the admission of that State to the Union, but not relishing the wild aspect of "life on the border," he returned to Canada, where he has since continued to reside, a portion of the time at Newbury, Middlesex Co., and latterly in retirement in Florence, where he is justly esteemed for his intelligence and social qualities.

The following excerpt, found under "The Bobier Family," was taken from the book "The Dixon County History", published in 1982:

The Nebraska Bobiers all seem to have a common ancestor. He was John Bobier, who was born in 1804 in Wexford County, Ireland, and emigrated to Canada in 1816, eventually settling in the Village of Florence in Ontario, Canada. John's ancestors were French Huguenots driven to Ireland some generations before his birth. His family was so poor that they were obliged to travel by foot from their port of entry, New York City, to Canada.
John married Matilda Scarlet, believed to be the daughter of a John Alfred and Lady Elizabeth (Meredith) Scarlet, in 1829. Matilda was of English descent. John and Matilda (Scarlet) Bobier had fifteen children between the years 1830 and 1853: Lucy Ann (Potter), Hannah (Ward), William Henry, Emily (Dygart-Bentley), John, Richard, Alfred, Matilda (Bolton), Lorinda (Mitton), George Washington, Eliza Martha (Huston), Maria (Bloom), Isaac, Francanna, and Margaret (Johnston-Leitch). Many of these children came to the United States, including Emily, Alfred, Matilda, George Washington, and Isaac. Isaac, in particular, was responsible for many Dakota County Bobier descendants.
