Descendants of Gregory BOBIER

110. WILBERT JOHN4 MITTON (LORENDA3 BOBIER, JOHN2, GREGORY1) was born May 05, 1861 in Harwich Township, Kent County, Ontario, Canada, and died December 21, 1937 in Walkerville, Ontario, Canada. He married MARY JANET BENTLEY September 29, 1886 in Ontario, Canada, daughter of LEONARD BENTLEY and ISABELLA HAGGART. She was born September 13, 1864 in Harwich Township, Kent County, Ontario, Canada, and died May 25, 1940 in Walkerville, Ontario, Canada.

Notes for W
ILBERT JOHN MITTON:
The following biography was written by Wilbert Mitton's grandson, Lloyd Mitton, of Chatham, Ontario, Canada:

WILBERT JOHN MITTON and MARY JANET BENTLEY
MARRIED
SEPTEMBER 29,1886.
The Guilds School Register for the year 1872 shows both the above names. WILBERT MITTON is age ten and MARY BENTLEY is age eight.
Their parents lived on adjacent farms. Their education level is uncertain but probably both passed their Entrance corresponding to Grade 8 to-day. Beyond that they would have to pursue their education through reading and practical training in the home.
There is a church in Guilds. It was built in 1869. Since both Wilbert and Mary lived close to that church, it is likely that both attended this Methodist church during their childhood. On December 6, 1992, the writer was priveleged to bring a Gideon Message in this church.
After their marriage, they farmed on the north side of the dead end road closest to Rondeau Bay. It was about a mile west of the Howard Harwich townline.
Two children were born at this location. The eldest Lorenda Belle was born on August 21, 1888. It is significant that she was named after Lorenda, Wilbert's mother and Belle, Mary's mother. It must have been a very sad day when some six weeks later she died on October 2, 1888.
On June 12, 1890, Orland Welbury was born.
In 1890, they moved to Lot 8, Camden Township two miles west of Thamesville. The farm, which they called Mapleton Lodge, was between the Longwoods Road and the Thames River. Since the farm had previously been owned by a Bobier, it is possible that there was some relationship through Wilbert's mother.
LESLIE BENTLEY,their second son,arrived on April 6, 1892.
Alice Louise was born May 30, 1893.
Russell Edgar was born November 18, 1895.
Clara Belle was born June 24, 1897.
Leonard Robert was born June 11, 1903.
The farm became the supplier of milk for the Village of Thamesville for many years. Wilbert gave a great deal of his efforts in building the community. He served as a founding director of the Thamesville Telephone Company which remained as a local company until about 1965.
He was also one of the Elders of the Methodist Church when the new building was built in 1898.
His name appears frequently in the minutes of the Thamesville Branch of the Bible Society.
Wib and Mary as they were called by their friends, sold Mapleton Lodge farm in November 1917 to Charles Agar.
They moved to Thamesville and lived in the beautiful Ferguson home just north of Mr. & Mrs. Humbert Graves. The address to-day is 59 Anne Street.
They resided here until 1920 when they moved to 332 Windermere Road, Walkerville, Ontario. In addition to their home, they purchased a four family apartment at the corner of Windermere Road and Ottawa Street. The apartment was about four doors from their residence.
They invested the farm money in the properties and obtained a mortgage for the balance. The anticipated rental income was to provide for them as well as making payments on the mortgage.
Unfortunately, by 1929 and the stock market crash, it didn't work out as planned. Their tenants lost their jobs and couldn't pay the rent. Mortgage payments couldn't be met and they soon lost the apartment to the mortgage
holders. This at least removed the tax burden on the apartment. However, the mortgage had extended to their residence. They were faced with the loss of their home. The family sat down with them to determine a solution. Other family members were also suffering as a result of the Depression and could do nothing. Fortunately, Orland and Leslie were able to pool sufficient of their limited resources to permit them to keep their home. Wilbert helped in any way he could including selling some insurance.
On July 1,1935, Walkerville became part of the new greater Windsor. The address was changed to 1278 Windermere Road. Fortunately the street name remained the same.
On September 29, 1936, Wilbert John and Mary Janet celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. It was held at The Manor in Windsor and all the family were there.
Wilbert died on December 21, 1937 after a long illness.
Mary died on May 25, 194O following a stroke.
He was 76 years of age and she was 75.
Both are buried in the Leonard Bentley family plot in Evergreen Cemetery, Blenheim just inside the eastern gate.

  Notes for RUSSELL EDGAR MITTON:
The following remembrance of Russell Mitton was written by his nephew, Lloyd Mitton, of Chatham, Ontario, Canada:

Russell had the keenest sense of humour. He could brighten any day. His older siblings called him 'Baby Nell' for reasons known only to them.
He was in Siberia with the Siberian Expeditionary Force just after the close of World War I. He was there when I was born so I was given his name. Later he told us of the extreme cold in Siberia. In fact you could put a pot of boiling water outside and it would freeze so fast that the ice was hot.
Uncle Russ worked at a great variety of jobs in Thamesville, Windsor and Tilbury in the course of his life. He even spent a period of time prospecting for gold in British Columbia.
Once when I was about ten years old, I stayed overnight in his apartment in Windsor. I was a bit surprised when he opened a closet door and pulled down the Murphy bed. He proceeded to tell me how sometimes in the night they folded up and closed the door after them. Needless to say, I got little sleep that night.
I remember him best as he stood by Dad's casket with tears in his eyes as he said 'He was a great guy!'
Only a year and a half later, he followed Dad in death at Tilbury.
