The following information was obtained through the World Family Tree CD, Volume 2, published in 1995 by Broderbund Software, Inc.:

Ethel and Wendell traveled around Kentucky as "Home Missionaries." As missionaries, they would travel from town to town and establish methodist churches. When Wendell contracted TB, Ethel placed Clarice and Nadine (Mary) in an orphanage north of Chicago. After Wendell died of TB, Ethel continued with missionary work and visited the children at the orphanage. Due to the uncertainty of the situation, Nadine was adopted by Ethel's half-sister, Clara, and her husband Carl Madsen. Ethel then met Alva Hugh Lawrence, a (widowed?) preacher with a young daughter named Ruth. Ethel and Alva married and retrieved Clarice from the orphanage.
