The following excerpt, found under "Harry and Maude Myers," was taken from the book "The Dixon County History", published in 1982:

My dad Harry Myers born in 1894 to Major and Angeline (Bolton) Myers and my mother Maude (Heidy) Myers born in 1897 to Eli Heidy and Amanda (Fisher) Heidy were married in Sioux City, Iowa in 1918. They lived in the Ponca and Newcastle areas until moving to Ponca in 1952. My parents had two children, myself and my brother Darrel who died of polio when he was twenty-one. My dad's parents farmed when he was born and his childhood was spent near Martinsburg, Ne. They moved to the Ponca area later. As a young man he worked for Youngs Dairy in Sioux City, was drafted into the Army and later was a co-owner of a garage in Ponca.
His dad's family came from Iowa and he used to tell of their move to Nebraska. Granddad then fourteen and his brother thirteen were left to bring a wagon of supplies, a team of horses and a cow while their parents and younger children came ahead by train. They milked the cow on the way so they could have milk with their steady diet of cornmeal mush. When their cornmeal supply was low they stopped at a mill located on the bank of a creek to have some corn ground. The miller asked if they'd like to catch some fish. They were eager but had no fish hooks so he told them to wiggle their toes in the creek and they would catch all they could eat. They did and when the fish bit their toes they quickly jerked their foot out, the fish landing on the bank. Granddad said nothing ever tasted better.
My mother's parents came from Illinois. Her father homesteaded his land and also taught school. Her childhood was spent on their farm. She often told of their fourth of Julys which she liked almost as much as Christmas. They would wake up to the smell of my grandmother's burnt sugar cake and fried chicken as she prepared a picnic dinner. Granddad would have the horses hitched to the buggy with a bag of oats in the back to feed them. The three girls, mother, her twin and an older sister shivered with anticipation of the fun they would have. At last they were on the way to a picnic near Allen, Ne. Mother said it was just beginning to get light as they drove along the country road. You could see lights come on in houses as people lit their lamps. As they got there they were met by Aunts, Uncles and cousins for a day of visiting, picnic dinner, races and games. A day to be remembered by all.
As a young woman mother taught country school. After their marriage they farmed. They went through years of drought and depression, years when there wasn't much money but always enough to eat and wear. I remember a trip to Sioux City was something we looked forward to for months and thought about it for months afterwards. Both my parents are buried in Silver Ridge Cemetery about four miles west of Ponca.
