*A correction to the above obituary was given to this researcher by Virginia (Curry) Brondum:
The young married couple did not farm in the Wynot area. They farmed the Diamond Horse Farm two miles north of Ponca just south of Ponca State Park after their marriage. They lived there when I was born.
Around 1929, they moved to the Francis place about a mile and a half west, adjoining the Lamprecht, Riffey, and Rahn farms. This land was in School District #9 where I started school. My mother told me she had attended school there, also. Could it be that her family lived where the Rahn farm was? I know that my great-grandparents owned that land at one time. Joanne was born while living on the Francis place. When she was about six months old, our mother had a serious case of pneumonia, and her recovery was slow. Aunt Addie and Papa Crombie kept me all winter, and Joanne was cared for by Dad and other people who would go there each day to help. It must have been very difficult for all of them, no miracle drugs for use at that time.
When Dad began to operate the Ferry Boat across the Missouri River three miles north of Ponca, we left the farm and moved to a house in Ponca vacated by a family named Arends. It was located close to the school house on what was then called Upper Street. They lived there a very short time before moving in 1937 to the farm north of town owned by Carl Lindvall, occupying the buildings, but the land was farmed by a neighbor. Mom raised chickens, Rhode Island Reds, two hundred at a time, and they were delicious fixed her way! This land was in School District #32. With Marian Rahn Smithey as teacher in this country school, Joanne began her formal education, and I attended the 7th and 8th grades there. After Nancy was born in late 1939, a house owned by Don and Selma Mohr was purchased in Ponca, and was to be their home for many years.
