Notes for IAN MOR MACLELLAN:
As you may be aware, the Maclellan and MacAulay families of North Uist have always been closely linked. Tradition is that two MacAulay brothers, accompanied by a MacLellan nephew (i.e. son of one of their sisters) were brought to South Uist c1600 by Lord MacDonald of Clanranald, the then owner of South Uist, as groomsmen for his horses (South Uist was then a major supplier of horses to the mines on the mainland). Tradition is that the MacAulay brothers and their MacLellan nephew came from the "Athwart Isles" which would probably have been Coll and Tiree. After a few years in South Uist the three moved up to the Baleshare area of North Uist and at a still later date some of the MacAulays and MacLellans from Baleshare moved up to the Paible District (i.e. Balemore, Knockintorran, Hougharry, Tigharry, Paiblesgarry). The original two MacAulay brothers and their MacLellan cousin are believed to be the progenitors of all MacAulays and MacLellans on North Uist. I have collected a few MacLellan patronymics that go back to an "Iain Mor MacLellan", who is believed to be the MacLellan cousin referred to above, and counting the generations back has allowed me to estimate that he was born c1600. Blair MacAulay (Oakville, ON) It is this MacLellan that has caused the clan in N. Uist to be reffered to as the "Clan Iain Mhoir". William Matheson says in "Notes on North Uist Families" that the name MacLelan appears frequently in Benbecula and South Uist before Iain Mhor but no in N. Uist before Iain Mhor. It is possible that the first of the MacLellans crossed on or both of the intervening fords to settle in North Uist.. That crossing was said to have been the grandfather of Iain Mhor, Iain.
