He married (1) Isabella Todd on 13 Jun 1839 in Parish of Carmyllie, Forfarshire, S, daughter of Alexander Todd and Jean Anderson. He married (2) Jessie Herald on 16 Jun 1855 in 5 Newgate street, Arbroath, Angus, Scotland, daughter of William Herald and Ann Mitchell.

John Macdonald married his first wife Isabella Todd on the 13th of June 1839 in the Parish of Carmyllie, Forfarshire, Scotland. Isabella died c1852, possibly after the birth of a child.
At the time of John's second marriage (Age 47) was employed as a Carter and resided 8 Newgate street, Arbroath, Forfar. Born 28/05/1808 of Abernethy. Widower, second marriage. His father Alexander Macdonald was employed as a Mason and his wife Margaret Carmichael had a listed occupation of Farm Servant and they are both dead at this time according to marriage certificate. Jessie Herald (Age 35) resided in March of Letham, with a listed occupation of Farm Servant. Born 04/08/1820 of Inverkeillor. Spinster. Her father William Herald was employed as a Farm Servant at this time and his wife Anne Mitchell was also employed as a Farm Servant and at this time they are both listed as dead at this time according to marriage certificate. Witnesses to the marriage were James Souter and Katherine McKay. Marriage registered in the Burgh of Arbroath, County of Forfar on the 19th of June 1855 in Arbroath.
In the 1841 Census there is a John Macdonald staying in Dunfermline listed as a Agricultural Labourer aged 32yrs along with a Angus Macdonald same occupation aged 20yrs. Both staying at 19 Lochend.
Also in a 1841 Census John's wife Isabel is listed as staying at the dwelling of Auchrenny, Parish of Panbridge, Angus aged 25yrs, c1816 born Angus, Scotland along with their daughter Helen aged 11 months, c1840 born Angus, Scotland.
On the 1851 Census he stayed at the dwelling of Dowrie. The census took place in Arbirlot, Angus, Scotland. At this time his listed occupation is Agricultural Labour aged 42yrs, c1809 born Munchy, Morayshire. His wife is listed as Isobella aged 36yrs, c1815 from Carmyllie, Forfar. Children listed:- Helen aged 10yrs, c1841, a Scholar, born Inverkeillor, Forfarshire. Margaret aged 8yrs, c1843, a Scholar, born Carmyllie, Forfarshire. Alexander aged 6yrs, c1845, a Scholar, born Carmyllie, Forfarshire. Ann aged 3yrs, c1848, born Arbirlot, Forfarshire. George aged 1yr, c1850, born Arbirlot, Forfarshire.
On the 1861 Census he stayed at the dwelling of 2 Boysack Mills Cotten. The census took place in Inverkeillor, Angus, Scotland. At this time his listed occupation is Carter/Master aged 52yrs, c1809 born Abernethy, Morayshire. His second wife Janet aged 41yrs, c1821 listed as a Carter/Masters Wife from Inverkellor, Forfar. Children listed:- Ann aged 14yrs, c1847 occupation a Mill Worker, George aged 12yrs, c1849 occupation a Mill Worker, Jane aged 10yrs, c1851 a Scholar, Janet aged 8yrs, c1853 a Morin Carters Daughter, John aged 5yrs, c1856 a Scholar and William aged 2yrs, c1859.
In the 1871 Census he stayed at the dwelling of 11 Lochland street, Arbroath. The census took place in St Vigeans, Inverbothock, Angus, Scotland. John aged 62yrs is employed as a Labourer, birth Morayshire Abernethy. Janet is listed as Jessie aged 50yrs.Children listed:- Ann aged 23yrs and Jane aged 19yrs are employed as Factory Workers, John aged 15yrs is employed as a Apprentice Baker, William aged 13yrs is a Factory Worker and Janet aged 10yrs is a Scholar. Also at this time a grandaughter named Margaret aged 2yrs is staying with them.
Death occured Between 1871 & 1881 re census's

At the time of JM death he was married to Jessie Herald and his occupation was Farm Servant. He died at 06.00am aged 65yrs. His parents were both dead at this time. His father AM registered occupation was unclear and mother Margaret Carmichael was listedas a farm worker. Cause of death was Hemophiga of 1.5 days, dibility. Seen after death by Dr. James unreadable and this was informed by son John Macdonald. Death registered in the District of Arbroath in the county of Forfar at Arbroath on the 12th of April 1880.
On the part of the death certificate that listed John's name & wives names, it stated at the bottom in brackets (illigitimate).
