From: "Bob Rowe" To: Subject: RE: [MCKERCHER] McKercher families from Scotland to Ontario Date: Sunday, September 16, 2007 9:02 AM Hello Jack, No, I didn't give up on you. I am extremely busy with several interests and I know that many others are too. I have been working through what you sent me and I am very grateful for all the work you have done connecting McKercher families. I have also been going through your pages at the FamilyTreeMaker site. I was excited to see your "Exchange of email" page. If the following doesn't fall in the category of "Small World" I don't know what does! I am very quickly scanning all the correspondences clicking a full page at a time. As I am clicking, I see a reference to someone in New Zealand. I click a couple more times and see a correspondence from Shona. I thought, "Wow, I know a Shona from New Zealand". I scroll back up slowly to see if there was any chance it is the same one. IT IS!! I met Bill and Shona Richardson a few years ago when they came to the US for an antique truck convention. In 1996 Bill bought an antique truck from a friend of mine in the American Truck Historical Society. It is so sad that Bill died so suddenly in March of last year. While Shona and I spoke briefly when we met, the subject of genealogy never came up. Now it turns out she is a McKercher! I say again "WOW". I also copied the report supplied by Barbara Bouskill. I have several unconnected McKercher trees entered in Legacy feeling that someday I will connect them. All the McKerchers entered are from the Stormont/Glengarry area of Ontario. Knowing that many family members settled in the same area, my gut tells me that they are probably connected. I have many of the same people in my tree that Barbara has! In some areas I have more information than she, and visa versa. I wouldn't mind connecting with Barbara some time. It will take me more time to enter what you sent. It appears, though, that you have provided some of the connections I was looking for. There is another lady in Georgia, Judy Robertson, who has a McKercher page on the web. Perhaps you have connected with her as well. She has an old photo from her family collection posted there that shows my 1st cousin twice removed and the caption reads "a cousin to Peter McKercher". I asked exactly how they were connected and she did not know; only that one of her ancestors wrote that on the back of the photo. This new info will probably connect them! There were so many Duncan McKerchers and Peter McKerchers that it makes my head spin. Like many genealogists, I did not do a very good job of sourcing my entries in the beginning. I would be happy to share/exchange gedcoms with any other from the McKercher line. I have added you to my email address book. I expect there will be several more communications in our future. Later, Bob Rowe ROWE, CAMERON, MCKERCHER, AIRD, and many others. -----Original Message----- From: mckercher-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mckercher-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jack MacKercher Sent: Saturday, September 15, 2007 1:49 PM To: mckercher@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MCKERCHER] McKercher families from Scotland to Ontario Hi Bob, You probably have given up on me, but I took some time research your interest. There are hundreds of McKerchers born in the immediate Glen Lyon and Kenmore areas. I did considerable work in the records of the Church of the Latter Day Saints back in 1984 shortly after my return from a visit to Glen Lyon. In all the records I took note of .. there is only 1 Donald born on 30 March 1802 to Donald and Christian McLellan who were wed on 29 July 1787. They resided in Gallin cottage ... very, very important because that is smack dab in the middle of the Meggernie estate. Their family began with Betty born in 1790, Duncan 1791, Christy 1794, Malcolm 1796, Mary 1798, John 1800, Donald 1802, and Margaret 1806. All these childen were born at Gallin cottage. There was a second McKercher family, Duncan and Catharine McLellan, living at Meggernie and .. please take note of the coincidence of male names of the children. Malcolm 1787, Donald 1788, Duncan 1790, John 1792, William 1794, and my great grandfather Fercher. It may be shear coincidence, but Donald and Christian named their first daughter Betty which is what Fercher named one of his daughters. Both families had Duncans, Donalds, Malcolms and Johns I have always thought Donald and Duncan were brothers and most probably the sons of Duncan McKachater and Ann ? who were wed at Migerny in 1762 (forgive the spellings but we're talking McKercher and Meggernie. There was a long relationship between the McKerchers and the ownership of Meggernie. I know Fercher who changed his first name to Farquhar and last name to McKerchar, was the factor (job which exercised supervision of the estate). And by virtue of all his children being born at Meggernie, I believe my great, great grandfather Duncan also was the factor perhaps because he was a few years Donald's senior. I combed the Donalds in Glen Lyon and also Kenmore. Only one was born in 1802. I also reviewed my notes on the censuses of 1841,1851 and 1861 in which I included every McKercher and where they lived. No sign of a Donald born in 1802 which is a negative way of adding weight to your Donald being the son of Donald and Christian McKercher. So Bob, you can take the risk of accepting me as a first cousin several times removed or take the easy out and claim it can't be proven in a court of law. Money is not a consideration, unless you have some extra for alms. I've got five grown adults with so much in the way of progeny themselves, I'll be lucky they don't take it away from me before I'm buried at Arlington. To my knowledge, none bearing our name has been a traitor, thief or cheator at the game of golf. We have carried forth the fighting spirit of our Scot heritage in that collectively and mixed with my maternal genes .. we have fought in the Crusades against the Sarasins at Accre and again at Constantinople and because of my dear Mother are direct descendants of Charlemagne, sons and daughters of the American Revolution, Civil War, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm and my eldest son, as Commanding Officer of San Jacinto, an aegis class cruiser, lobbed a fleet record of 29 tomahawks on target in the opening! days of this mess in Iraq. Give me your reply so I can either begin boasting .. or .. seeing if I can find any record of your Donald having sided with the Brits against the Farquharsons.
