| Over the last 15 years I have researched the origins of my family. Of course like most people at the beginning of their search, I thought I was a Macfie. However I soon found that I was every bit as much a McNeill or a Hunter or a Paterson or a Crawford or any of the hundreds of surnames which now fill the branches of my tree. The Macfie branch sprouts from the Isle of Bute, an island in the Firth of Clyde and a familiar holiday destination for my family in my youth.This side of the family are 100% Scots never moving far from the West Coast of Scotland. My mother is a McNeill and three of her four grandparents were born in Northern Ireland. I come from humble stock - farmers , tailors, shoemakers, joiners and grocers but as my research grows their lifes begin to come alive and I begin to understand the joys and tragedies which weave through all our lifes. Oh yes, there are weavers as well!! I continue to burrow through the records taking full advantage of the wonders of the Internet. How far we have come since I spent days in the General Registrars Office in Edinburgh among the large,dusty,tomes. I would be delighted to hear from anybody who has any interest in my family as sharing information is part of the delight of genealogy. | |
