Notes for E
LIZA MANSELL:
Benjamin Billingham and Eliza Mansell were born in England, and married at Brierly Hill, Staffordshire, in 1883. They had seven children who survived infancy, one of whom died at ten.

Lizzy and Mattie were born in England. Bertha was the first child born in the United States. She had a twin brother, Clarence, who died after three days. The other children who gre to adulthood were Sadie, Minnie and Walter.

Benjamin was very strict, and too poor to allow any of the girls to go to school beyond the eighth grade. They had to get married or go to work. In time, they all married. Benjamin worked in the steel mills untill he retired and bought a little farm outside Pittsburgh.

It was fun for the grandchildren to visit them, because their house was an old homestead, and the only water in the house came from the hand pump at the kitchen sink. The bathroom was a two-hole outhouse. Grandmother had to cook all the meals on a wood-burning stove. The "refrigerator" was the dirt cellar deep under the house. At night, the grandchildren walked to the neighbor's house to get fresh milk, eggs and vegetables.

A short time after they moved to the farm, Benjamin had a heart attack and died before the doctor could arrive. Eliza sold the farm and lived with her daughter Minnie. She often went to California to visit Bertha. She made all of her clothes from the same pattern: a long black dress with a little white collar.

Eliza never lost her English accent. She always dropped the letter "H", so she would say, "Where is me 'at?" for "Where is my hat?" She would say to the children, "Be off with you", and we knew it was time to leave.
