Notes for MaryBelle MacEachern: Notes from "The Piper" (Sept/98)...edited by Eric Mayne "through family matriarch, Mary Belle MacDonald, we can trace our lineage back to John of Isley and Amie MacRuari--the original MacDonalds of Clanranald. Their home, Castle Tioram, dates back to 13th century Scotland but it has been unoccupied since 1715. That's when allan of Clanranald ordered its destruction by fire. He was leaving to fight the English (again) on a distant front & feared it would fall into their hands in his absence. This would have been disastrous since Tioram (Gaelic for "Castle of the dry island") was a key strategic location. Legend has it the castle was built, not by John, but by Amie. Sound like any other MacDonald women we know?"
