Notes for JOSEPH BUCK:
From "The Buck Family" by William Kirkpatrick; 28 August 1987

"Joseph Buck was the second child of Nicholas Buck by his first wife Mary Appolonia Kohl, b 1 Nov 1764, baptized 18 Nov1764; sponsors Joseph Kohl and Alberta Kohl at Haycock, Bucks Co,
Pa. (GR p 13; complete record at St. Joseph's, Philadelphia..Beek (sic) ACHSR, Vol 1, p 279).

In 1787 he was assessed taxes of 5 shillings as a singleman but for no land. However, it is assumed that he inherited about that time a portion probably 1/2 of his deceased father's property in Springfield Twp, Bucks Co, Pa. (PA Archives, Series 3, Vol 13, P 810). He remained in Bucks Co. until about 1800, when he sold his real estate holdings to his brother and with his family moved to Whitehall Twp, Northampton Co (now Lehigh-Co) Pa. Between 17 Feb 1805 and 29 May 1808 he moved to Westmoreland Co with his family and again, after 25 Mar 1824, removed to Cambria Co, Pa. joining his son already there since about 1823.

On 2 Dec 1787, Joseph Buck married his first wife, Mary Elizabeth Meecle/Merkle/Mackel/Mechel/Magel b 23 June 1769, daughter of Christopher and Magdalen Meecle. (GR p 177; p 38). After bearing Joseph's first two children, Mary Elizabeth d on 24 Aug 1794 aged "about 35 years old." (Actually 25 years old.) (GR, p 184.) The two children were 3 and 4 years old. She was buried at Bally, Washington Twp, Berks Co, Pa.

After an eight-month mourning period, on 20 Apr 1795 Joseph Buck married Rosina Dumm, b Aug-Dec 1766, daughter of Caspar and Mary Eva Dumm of Moselem Springs, Richmond Twp, Berks Co, Pa. (GR, p 181.)

Joseph's third child was b 4 Apr 1796. The year 1797 must have been a traumatic one for him and his wife; In January 1797 within four days they lost their second and third son leaving only one, their oldest. In November 1797 they had another son. The three deaths of his first wife and two sons in as many years may have been the motivating stimulus for his decision to move about 1799/1800 to Whitehall Twp, Northampton Co (now Leigh Co) where he had four other children. His last two children were born handicapped (deaf and dumb) in 1803, and 1804. This additional trauma may have again motivated him to move this time to Westmoreland Co between Feb 1805 and May 1808. Their move after 1824 to Cambria County was probably motivated by a desire to be in close proximity to his sons who had preceded him there in 1823.

Joseph died in Cambria Co between 1830 and 1840. His widow, Rosina (Dumm) Buck survived him dying in Carroll Twp,Cambria Co, Pa between 1850 and 1860. In the 1850 Census, she was living at the age of 83 in Carroll Twp caring for her 46 year old handicapped daughter Susan.

In 1833 Rosina's brother Valentine Dumm had joined her in Cambria Co, thereby becoming the founder of the Dumm family there.

By his two marriages, Joseph2 Buck had eight children."
