ED V. MAGILL

Ed V. Magill is a member of a family that has been active in the development of Texas for more than a century. Mr. Magill’s father came to Texas during the days when the state was under the sovereignty of Mexico and fought in the war for Texas Independence and was a member of the forces under General Sam Houston at the battle of San Jacinto which resulted in freeing Texas from Mexican domination. The elder Magill was a native of Kentucky and settled in Burnet County and aided in making the necessary survey when the county was organized and was one of the first commissioners elected after organization of the county was completed.

Ed V. Magill was born in Burnet County on the thirtieth of January, 1861, and is the oldest living native of the town of Burnet where he has lived for many years. Mr. Magill has spent his entire business career in the cattle industry and has a fine ranch where he raises blooded Jersey and Hereford cattle which he sells locally and ships to Forth Worth. During the early days of the industry before the coming of railway transportation, Mr. Magill made numerous trips over the trail to sell cattle in Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and Nebraska. Mr. Magill’s parents, W. H. Magill and Elizabeth (Hedrick) Magill, were both natives of Kentucky.

In 1907 Mr. Magill was married to Miss Della Nichols, a native of DeWitt County and a daughter of L. Nichols, formerly a resident of Mississippi who came to Texas many years ago and was a well known planter and rancher in DeWitt County. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Magill are Zuma, Kyle, Edward, Winston and Katie Mae Magill.

Mr. Magill has been interested in many civic activities in Burnet County and served for four years as a member of the school board at Spring Creek. He is a member of the Old Trail Drivers Association and in religious life a communicant of the Methodist Church.
