MARTIN VAN BUREN CAMPBELL Obituary from "THE FREE METHODIST" Chicago, Illinois published May 27, 1902 :

Rev. Martin Campbell was born in VErmont, April 11, 1837 and died in Salina, Kansas, March 31, 1902. When he was 2 years old his parents moved to New York State and lived twelve miles from Rochester for thirteen years. In 1852 he moved to South Elgin, Illinois and in 1854 to Fayette County, Iowa. He remained there nearly three years and attended what is now the Northern Iowa University. While attending this school he was clearly converted. He returned to South Elgin in 1855? (3 years =1857), and taught school one mile southeast of town. During the winter a revival was held by Rev. C. E. Harroun, Sr., and Frank Sheperdson. Before this Brother Campbell had been seeking the fullness of the Holy Spirit for two or three months. The first meeting he attended he was convinced that what these brethren were preaching was what he was hungering and thirsting for. "But," said he, "oh what blunders I made in attempting to get it!" As it appeared to him there was no other way but to take the cross, which seemed to mean to be homeless and friendless, yet, as he took the cross, light love, and joy came to his believing heart, and he proved the taking up the cross to mean just the opposite of what it had appeared to mean, viz., many homes and many friends; also victory in life, triumph in death and a crown of righteousness in the world to come. He was among the first to unite with the Free Methodist Church in Illinois. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary A. Mitchell, March 26, 1861, at Elgin Illinois. They came to Kansas and settled in Marshall county, near Barrett, in 1879, where his wife died March 19, 1890. Nine children were born to them, one dying when two years old, leaving five daughters and three sons to mourn his loss. He also leaves four brothers and one sister. Brother Campbell was a kind neighbor, a faithful and an affectionate father, a true Christian and a good preacher. One marked peculiarity of his life was that no razor ever came on his head, hence, he was a Nazarite all his days. He was received into the Kansas conference at Arkansas City, in 1899, and was sent to the following circuits: Alma, Topeka, and Iola. He had to leave his last charge on accout of poor health. He will be missed in the church and in the home, but we can remember, his smiling face and shouts of "Glory to God!" "Amen" "Hallelujah" In behalf of the bereaved ones we ask the prayers of the church that the God of the father and mother may be the children's God. Funeral services were held by the writer at Barrett, where a large number of friends and neighbors gathered to pay a tribute of love and respect to the departed. Text, 2 Tim. 4:6-8.
