Notes for J
URG MICHL (HITTEL) HITTLE:
Jurg Michael came to this country aboard the Ship "Winter Galley" with the Ships Master as Edward Paynter. The Ship arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 5, 1738. Winter Galley originally left from Rotterdam, Holland, but of late from Deal. There were 252 passengers, 139 of whom took their qualification oath and there were 113 women and children. Jurg took the oath of the allegiance to the English Crown on September 5, 1738, same day he arrived in Philadelphia. Pennsylvania. The individuals on this ship were known as "Palatines" coming from the Palatinate Section of Germany along the Rhine River. They left their homes because of Religious Persecution by the Catholic French invaders. Within four (4) years Jurg Michael had met and married Anna Maria. He was a Cordwainer or Harness Maker, or someone who worked with Leather. This was his profession for 22 years and during this period, he and Anna Maria had ten (10) children. They may have lived in Bethlehem or in Upper Saucon Township during this time. On January 30, 1760, Jurg was issued a Land Warrant for a Tract of Land in Northampton County by Thomas and Richard Penn under the hand of Lt. Governor James Hamilton. The following day he received a Patent for 171 acres, 90 perches for warrant monies already paid, plus 85pds. 15 S and 7P. His Plantation adjoined land owned by Henry Rader, Adam Sheaffer, Sebastian Knouse, Lewis Klotz and Daniel Turney. Jacob and Jurg Frederich were the only children to be born after he acquired his Land. He is believed to have fought in the French-Indian War under the listed name of "Hutler". He died in 1786 and is buried in Western Salisbury Lutheran Church Cemetery, Salisbury TWP., Pennsylvania. Jeruselem Cemetery-Pennsylvania.

Will was probated the 26th day of January 1786. An interesting fact is made known in the probate statement. George Kriebel of Uppermilford Township, Northampton County was the actual writer of the Will for Michael Hittel who was blind at the time. George wrote that Michael dictated and George read back to Michael what he had wrote and Michael agreed that it was his will and was to be executed as such.
