Notes for
?WILLIAM (GRUBER) GRUVER:
Documents written by a Reverend C. B. Gruver say that William Gruver d. 1841 lived to be 107 years old.

As of May 05, 2000, I have not been able to find any definitive proof of Willliam Gruver's birth. All I have so far is the fact that his Wife in about 1784 or 1785 told a Probate court that she had remarried a William Gruber/Gruver son of John Peter Gruber and Anna Barbara born in the Palatinate Section of Germany and embarked on the Ship "Charming Betsy" at Rotterdam, Holland and of Late London, England arriving in Philadelphia on October 12, 1733. He married the widow of Paul Brodt/Brod , Barbara Miller-Brodt/Brod-Gruber. Do not know where William Gruber is buried.

Louise: I feel very fortunate to have had such a
good family life. When I was a kid I figured I'd
been in more churches than all of my friends com-
bined, but I've had many positive influences in my
life. Before my father died last year, he and my
mom established a Chair in Peace and Mission at Eden
Seminary. This now enables students at Eden to study
abroad and for foreign students to study at Eden.
When I visit my mom at the home, I am usually not the
only one. She is a master storyteller, and has writ-
ten several books of their trips around the world.
One story is astounding. She had donated some clothes
to Church World Service in St Louis. While on a trip
in Africa, they were speaking to a group of young
women. Later in the day, mom noticed that the woman
seated next to her was wearing a blouse that she had
donated. Figure the odds.
I was aware that William was a no-good. In reading
Maria Eva Muller's will, (wife of Bernhardt), I dis-
covered that her daughter Eva's husband, Baltzer
Eckert, had also deserted Eva and the children.
Another good story is how my mom's grandfather,
Charles Hensel arrived in the US. He was in the
Prussian navy which made a port call in New York.
He never got back on the ship, and married Julia
Krug, who descended from the Krug Ironworks family
of Germany, which the Allies bombed in WWII, in
Connecticut. Charles and Julia moved to NYCity, and
in 1897-1898, they and their two young sons Walter
and Freddie died in an epidemic, leaving my grand-
mother Annette and her sister Caroline, as orphans.
My grandmother Annette lived to be 98, and she told
me how hard it was in those early days. If you've
ever seen documentaries of New York City at the turn
of
the century, it was a wild place. She met my grand-
father, George Eyer, in NYC working at Gimbels dept
store. They moved back to Mt Bethel, and when Annette
was in her 90's, the neighbors called St Louis and
said that she had a bad habit of chasing squirrels
off the roof of the farmhouse. She came to St Louis
and we would watch wrestling and eat ice cream bars
together at her apartment, and told me about her whole
life.
Incidentally, Bernhardt Muller and Martin Eyer, both
arrived in America in 1749, in Aug and Sep. Martin's
eldest son John Adam Eyer, who was a teacher and mus-
ician and Fraktur artist, and Bernhardt's son, Fred-
erick Miller, both donated the land where the Mt
Bethel Lutheran and Reformed church was built. I have
found several Eyer/Miller marriages, in addition to
my parents.
I do not have a home computer; I have relied mostly on
the census, church and cemetery records, LDS films,
and whatever I can dig up at the library.
In doing research, always remember that we are at the
mercy of the recordkeeper. I've never been able to
determine where Bernhardt Muller is buried. The only
mention of Maria Eva is in the Easton 1st Reformed
Church records, but no cemetery. Either his record
got lost, or he was just buried on the farm, as I
suspect a lot of folks were. If you look at
Humphrey's list of pre-1800 burials in Northampton,
you just have to believe that known people just didn't
disappear. Take for instance, people that you know
were living in Mt Bethel in say 1850, and died 1852,
but are not listed in any area cemetery, you can be
pretty sure they weren't buried in Montana. I have
found Pennsylvania records to be excellent, but some
people are just not going to end up with a cemetery
record, particularly those born pre-1800.
I have collected on 3 X 5 notecards much of the info
that I find, including census records. I have a
bunch beginning in 1850 of the Gruver family, primar-
ily of Mt Bethel. I'm going from memory, but I
have a Valentine Gruber born around 1820 living in
UMB in 1850, who I can't attribute to anyone. Also
a Simon Gruver 1840.

Thanks, Dave

Barbara Gruber, Upper Mt Bethel, wr. 2/12/1818, pr. 10/20/1818
Sons John, Daniel, William. Sons-in-law John Rimer, John Nicholas

Re: Burial: There is a Barbara Gruber born 8 January 1751 and died 20 MAR 1825 (per Barbara's Probate records she passed in 1818) the Barbara Gruber who died March 25, 1825 is buried in FORKS CHURCH CEMETERY, STOCKERTOWN, FORKS TOWNSHIP. THIS PARTICULAR CEMETERY HAS THREE APPELATIONS: STOCKER'S OR VAN ETTEN'S BURIAL GROUND, OR WERKHEISER CEMETERY. (from John T. Humphrey's book "PENNSYLVANIA GRAVESTONES-NORTHAMPTON COUNTY.) There could be a mistake in the date of death on this tomsbstone or Barbara could have been moved from another burial site to this site on March 25, 1825. The name and the birth date is actual on this Gravestone, however the date of death is in error per the Probate records dated 10/20/1818. (Big unsolved Question as at August 10, 2000)

Notes for M
ARY (CONNELLY) (OVERHOLT) OBERHOLTZER:
There is a legal question as to whether Mary was ever divorced from a Mr. Connelly before she married William Gruber/Gruver. From records found it does not look like the marriage was ever recognized by the State of Pa. as a Legal Union.
