ICHARD A. MAGEE:
Richard A. Magee, born 1804 in Natchez Terr. Miss to John and Bethany Scott Magee was married to Rachel Smith (Schmidt). Richard served in the Texas Revolution in 1836 as a Lt. and received a land grant of 640 acres, in which was then Nacogdoches County, Texas for this service. In 1839-40 Richard and Rachel sold their plantation in Rankin County, Miss and Packed up their belongings and their children, William L., Eli Edwin, Talitha Ann, Salina Ann, Jason Germain. They settled on his grant in which is now known as Henderson, Texas, Rusk County.

Richard was commissioner of Henderson, for the years of 1845-46-47-48-49-51 and 1855. He was one of the commissioners who helped to create the county of Rusk and the town of Henderson. These men worked extremely hard to build the first courthouse, and the first church and school.      Soon after Richard and Rachel settled here they had two more sons, John Lafayette, b. 1842 and Texan Seymour b. 1845. Sometimes in late 1849 or early 1850 Rachel died. Richard resigned from office of commissioner but later served again in 1851 to 1855. He traded his 2 tracks of land, including part of his headright of 67 shares in a Steamboat named the "General Rusk", of which he was a Captain.

On May 17, 1854 Richard married a widow named Cynthia Caroline Eaton. They had a son named Richard, Jr. 1855. In 1856 Richard and Caroline with family arrived in what was then, Wood/Rains County with no land and 20 slaves. On November 14, 1856 Richard bought 1153 acres of land in the Janes Forsythe survey. They settled the land and in the process of clearing the land, John age 15 was killed when a slave cut down a tree and it fell on him. He was the first to be buried on the land and that was how the Magee-McCord cemetery was started. Richard and Caroline had 3 more children,
Elisha, Nehemiah, and Rachel C. Richard A. Magee died October 18, 1869 and is buried in the Magee-McCord cemetery in Rains County, Texas.

It is not known, at this time, what happened to the ship, but there are records showing that it was the second steamship to travel down the Sabine River. It was used as a Man-of-war ship in the civil war for the Confederacy. The union navy had on several occasions tried to sink her, but was unable to do so at the time.

Richard A. Magee is buried in the Magee-McCord Cemetery, near Emory, Texas
