Welcome to the home page of William A. Magill. I am researching the Magill family in Ireland and the Sumner family from Wales. My immediate family emigrated from the UK in 1953. Branches of the family were located in Downshire N. Ireland, Cheshire, England and Denbighshire, Wales. Family members still reside in these locations and more distant relatives are likely in Scotland.
The earliest ancestor that I have identified is Robert Magill whose son John Magill resided at Mullaghdrin, Ballynahich. John was born about on August 30, 1802 and died in 1884. His wife's name was Dorothea. They had five sons, Joseph, James, Hugh, Adam and William, and a daughter Nancy. Hugh and Adam were both clergymen, the latter, devoting 55 year to the ministry in Bovevagh, Londonderry. He is mentioned in "A History of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland."
I am descended from Joseph, who married Ellen Lowry. They had three sons and five daughters. One son, Lowry, was my grandfather, who left the family farm at Mullaghdrin and settled at Drumawhey, outside of Newtownards in 1916.
