10. Charles Courtland BECKWITH
(1) was born on 26 May 1837 in Stonington,
New London County, Conecticut. He died on 18 Jan 1920 in Gandy, Logan County,
Nebraska. He was buried on 21 Jan 1920 in McCain Cemetery, Lot 15, Gandy, Nebraska.

Charles Courtland Beckwith, was born in Stonington, Connecticut, 26 May 1837,
and died at Gandy Nebraska 18 January 1920, age almost 83 years.
In the year 1860 he was united in marriage to Ann Eliza Young, and to this
union was born a son, Louis Beckwith, now living in Los Angeles, California.
His wife dying he was married to Rachel Ann Auble and this union was blessed
with two children daughter Lola Mae and a son Jay P., the latter dying in infancy.
Mr. Beckwith was a Civil War Veteran, enlisting in 1861, in the 71st New
York, and served exactly three years.
He was one of the pioneer settlers of Logan County, taking an active part
in its civic affairs. He served two terms as County Clerk, and was appointed
County Treasurer to fill a vacancy. He joined the Odd Fellows Lodge in Gandy
about twenty eight years ago, was a devoted member of the Episcopal Church, and
a member of the G.A.R. Post.
The last few years he has been living in Calloway Neb., but has always claimed
Logan County as his home and last Fall came back to be with his daughter Mrs.
Ralph B. Mahan and other relatives who tenderly cared for him in his last Illness,
until the Death Angel brought relief to his sufferings. He was an invalid for
more than four years and was patient through all his helplessness and suffering.
His wife was his constant companion and nurse, attending to his every want and
staying by him to the end.
The funeral was held at the M.E. Church Tuesday at twelve o'clock cunducted
by Rev. Watson, and all arrangements in charge of the local I.O.O.F. A large
number attended the funeral, several coming from Calloway, Neb.
The floral offerings were many and most beautiful pieces furnished by the
Odd Fellows did not arrive in time for the funeral.

24 Aug 1853 in Andover, Sussex County, NJ.. She died on 2 Apr 1935 in Calloway,
Logan County, Nebraska. She was buried on 5 Apr 1935 in McCain Cemetery Lot

Rachel Ann Beckwith.
Rachel Ann Auble was born at Andover, New Jersey, on August 24th of 1853,
died at her daughter's home, Mrs. Ralph B. Mahan in Calloway Nebraska, on 2 April
1935 at the age of Eighty one years, seven months and eight days
While a young woman she moved to Illinois where she was united in marriage
to Charles Courtland Beckwith at Swancreek, Ill., on 15 September 1880. To this
union two children were born: Jay P. Beckwith dying in infancy and Mrs Lola Mae
Mahan of Calloway Neb.. Mr. and Mrs. Beckwith moved to Nebraska in 1885 locating
first at Garfield in Lincoln County near Gandy Neb., then on to Calloway in 1900,
suffering the loss of her husband on January 18 1920 while making a visit at
the daughter's home in Gandy, Nebraska. Sister Beckwith has spent the last thirtyfive
years of her life in Calloway and vicinity. She united with the Episcopal Church
of Calloway, and was a charter member of the Calloway Rebekah Lodge there where
she maintained her membership.
To know this good woman was to love her. She numbered her friends by those
who knew her. She was a faithful and loving wife and mother. Her hand was always
extended to those about her who were in need of sympathy. Since the death of
her husband she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Lola Mae Mahan taking
more than an ordinary interest in the life and work of her grandchildren as they
grew up around her.
As she spent so much of her life in this community she leaves a host of friends
who will be saddened by her departure from this life.
She enjoyed her friends and always glad to mingle with them even with her
advanced years.
She leaves to mourn her loss her daughter Mrs. Lola Mae Mahan of Calloway,
Neb.,, Three sisters Mrs. Kinley of Augusta, Montana, Mrs. Frank Laverty of Beatrice,
and Jennie Goodenow of Gandy, two brothers , A.L.Auble of Arnold and W.L.D.Auble
of Ord, Nebr., five grandchildren and three Great grandchildren besides nieces
and nephews and many friends.
Funeral services were held from the Home and also the Gandy M.E. Church with
Rev. Nathan Thomas in charge, the music being furnished at the home by the
a ladies quartette, and the Church by their male quartette each group bringing
hymns of comfort to the bereaved loved ones.
The remains were laid to rest in the McCain cemetery with six of her nephews:
M.E.Auble, C.C. Auble, Jay Auble, Lewis Auble, Harry and Melvin Goodenow acting
as pall bearers. Rev. C.E.Carpenter, pastor of the Gandy Church lent assistance
to the service by reading the scripture and offering prayer. There was in attendance
at each service a large number of friends and many bouquets of flowers to furnish
sympathy and show esteem.
