Notes for Oliver Gatley:
On Saturday, Jan. 6,2001 the following appeared on the GATLEY surname message board on Family History.com posted by a D. Falcone:
"I have just begun to research the Gatley branch of my family tree when I came across Oliver Gatley listed as a brother your grandfather (or g grandfather?)My great grandfather was Oliver Gatley b. 11 July 1884 in Camden, NJ and d. 10 April 1974 Coatesville, PA.Could this be a connection ? Email me at [email protected]"This was addressed to James P. Gatley who had posted a search for his own grandfather Charles Current Gatley and his g grandfather, Thomas C. W. Gatley".Jim's answer to Donna began, "Congratulations, D. Falcone, you have struck genealogical "pay dirt".He went on to tell more about the family and this is when he and his Sister Marian Gatley Mahon began a family tree with Donna over the internet.
October 17, 2001 Donna reminisced: I remember great grandfather Oliver, widowed for the second time, having two lady friends. One here in the north for the good weather months and one in Florida for the winter!Later on March 22, 2002, she continued, "I remember Pop Gatley's fall down the stairs, but I remember him bouncing back pretty well for his age.He was bowling a few weeks before he finally passed on.I don't ever remember him being down for very long.He was not someone who sat still very long."
In a note from Connie Gatley, daughter-in-law of Oliver Gatley, she wrote: Since PopPop (Oliver) lived with Jim and me off and on for several months, I know his traits, talents and abilities. His inate ability with his hands which came to root in his oil paintings (Grandma Moses) at a late age.He was living with his daughter Dorothy Mae Gatley Bond and her son Ron when he died.(The Jim Gatley she referred to was her husband Everett James Gatley (the son of Oliver). Connie was added to our genealogical group late April 2002.She wrote, "I took a genealogy course, but all I learned was that Oliver Gatley's birth was in N.J. and his parents came from Sheffield, England.(Actually his mother did, but his father was from Lancashire near Manchester.) I had heard from Aunt Dot that he was in an orphanage for years, but was taken out and brought up an older sister called Sadie.(This would have been Sarah Gatley, but it is recorded that he was living with his Aunt Elizabeth Broomhead Hibbert..bis mother's sister..in Camden, N.J. in the 1900 census).Connie continued, "While Jim and I lived in Long Island, we had an electrician working on the house who said his grandmother's name was Sadie Gatley...same one?)
On March 23, 2003, Marian Gatley Mahon wrote Donna, " Thanks for sending the picture of your great grandfather Oliver with his two sons and one daughter, and also the picture of his other daughter, your grandmother.Oliver looks exactly like his big brother Charles Current Gatley, my grandfather and like my father Thomas Charles Gatley. You certainly can see the Gatley genes and especially the Gatley nose!I seem to be the only one in this generation who inherited the nose.
March 1,2003 Jim Gatley's email to Donna Falcone said: "So our grandfather Charles Current Gatley as court-appointed guardian, gave his permission for your 18-year old great grandfather to marry after he had left the Hibberts, become a laborer, and moved in with his pocket-book making girlfriend's Beck family in Philly. He probably met Florence at the pocket-book shop. This would follow as the 1900 census shows him as a pocketbook maker while he lived with his Aunt Elizabeth Hibbert.Charles was appointed as Oliver's guardian, since at 30 years of age he was Oliver's closest blood-related adult male. The certificate appointing Charles the guardian of Oliver along with Oliver's marriage certficate are both in the paper files in white boxes next to computer
