THE FOLLOWING IS NOT PROVED BUT I PUT IT HERE FOR FUTURE STUDY
In early days there were two John Gatley'smarried in the local church as follows: 1703-married to the church (nun); 1703, John Gatley to Elizabeth ___,
1710 John Gatley to __Cooke, and 1734 John Gatley to Hannah Faulkner.
1710-There is also an unknown Ralph Gatley, whose wife's maiden name was Margaret Harrd. They were married Oct. 9, 1766 in Cathedral, Manchester, England. Most Harrd family members are from Wales, but this one unknown.
If this Ralph and Margaret were our ancestors, the line would go: they had three children christened at the Cathedral, John in 1768, William 1770 and Margaret in 1776.This is also the same Cathedral where John Gatley and Martha Norman were later married. We are not positive that OUR John is this one who married this Martha (maiden name unknown) but we think so until proven or unproven by actual church records.
If this John and Martha WERE the parents of OUR John who marriedSarah Wild and became parents of our 13, the following information will bring their known descendants, as of June 20, 2003, downto nine generations and covered 56 typed pages. At that time there were 216 direct descendants that were known, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, 2nd through 6th gg's born in the line since their day. There are 40 in the eighth generation, and 21 in the ninth, alone! What a family. We are still multiplying, wrote Marian Gatley Mahon in an email to the round-robin cousins Friday, June 20, 2003.
The following concerning the meaning and derivation of the name GATLEY is taken from "A Dictionary of British Surnames" by P. H. Reaney, second edition with corrections and additions by R.M. Wilson, published by Routledge and Kegan Paul, London & Boston:
Gatecliff, Gatliff, Getliff: Thomas Gaytelyff 1457 FfY.From Gatley (Ches) earlier Gateclyve. Gateley, Gately,Gatley, Gatlay: Ralph de Gateleia 1086 DB (Nf): Simon de Gatle 1203 FFK; Henry Gateleye 1327; SRWo. From Gateley (Norfolk) or Gatley (Ches. Herford)Gater a derivative of OE gat goat; hence goat-herd
THERE ARE THREE DIFFERENT GATLEY MEN WE HAVE FOUND BORN IN THE LATE 1700 HUNDREDS WHOM WE ARE TRYING TO TIE TOGETHER WITH THE FAMILY:COULD THEY BE BROTHERS, COUSINS???

On another LDS site, it says he was christened 26 August 1787 (?) in the Cathedral (St. Mary's) Manchester Lancashire England. We have copy of an obit for him from Wilmington paper.LDS site says he died October 23, 1862. Could he have been an uncle of TCWG?
