John T. Gatley (b. November 1857, d. June 02, 1900)
Notes for John T. Gatley:
John was 13 years old when his father married Josephine Morton Holt in 1870 and his sister Sarah was nine at that time.Years later when Josephine died in 1915, she left money in her will to the children of both John and Sarah, who were her step-grandchildren, but left none to either of them.
The Philadelphia City Diretory shows him at 243 South 5th Street, while his father Joseph was living at 533 North 5th St.
By this time, he and his step-brother William Holt were in business as Gatley & Holt Liquors.
The 1887 through 1889 book also shows a listing for Gatley & Holt (John T. Gatley and William Holt who were step-brothers) liquors at 205 South 5th Street.John was also listed at 223 Point, in Camden, N. J., which was his home address, with occupation Saloon listedin these directories. We finally connected this John T. Gatley as the son of Joseph in 1894, by the first item in Joseph's will which states $5000 to be given to his SON John T. Gatley, but no mention of John's Sister Sarah in the will.
Sarah Gatley Harwood contested her father (Joseph Gatley's) will when he died in 1894, and the court records consisted of 156 pages of depositions and testimony, much of which concerned the state of mind and health of Joseph, who apparently suffered a stroke about August 1893 and never recovered.Everyone seemed to have a difference of opinion as to his mental capacity at the time he wrote the will. Two things were agreed upon: (1) Whenever Sarah and her Brother John T. visited they felt they were never allowed to be alone with their father; and (2) they agreed that he seemed much better the day that "Mrs. Holt" was buried from their home. Mrs. Holt was the wife of William Holt, the son of Sarah and John's stepmother, Josephine Morton Holt Gatley. It turned out in the testimony that Mrs. Holt was actually Mary Hannah Gatley Holt!! The very Mary Hannah all of us descendants in the year 2004 had been searching for in the genealogy. She was Joseph's niece (daughter and oldest child of Thomas Currant Worthington Gatley) and was married to Joseph's second wife's son!
For more information about this see the NOTES section in this Family Tree under the name Sarah A. Gatley Harwood.
According to his testimony,John T. had no contact with his father for some 8 years before Joseph fell ill, but they apparently reconciled after his stroke and before his death in 1894.John was living in Camden, New Jersey while his father was across the river in Philadelphia, and with no bridge at that time, travel between was not too easy.Continuing his testimony, John answered a question concerning his father's mental health with "Well, with the exception of the death of my cousin, he appeared to be more brighter that day than any other day I saw him". Who was your cousin, he was asked?Answer: Mrs. Holt.Later when his stepmother Josephine Morton Holt Gatley was testifying, it came out that this cousin was Mary Hannah Gatley Holt, as mentioned above.
Strange coincidence: in 1867 Philadelphia City Directory there is a John Gatley shown as bar tender at Great Western Hotel and another listing shows a John Gatley at hotel at 145 South 4th Street, Philly. We know the Gatleys lived at this address, but this John T. could only have been about 10 or 12 at that time.Who was this John?
Interesting tidbit: Young Josephine Gatley's husband was John MCNEAL (McNeill) and this John T.'s wife was Annie McNEAL before their marriage.Wonder if they were related? Both born in New Jersey.
According to information in email dated March 14, 2004 from Audrey Bailey, she says: Sunny Longordo sent a death certificate for John T. Gatley which said he died the day after the 1900 census was taken on 2/6/1900 age 43 years at 313 Green Street, Philadelphia. This 2/6/1900 is actually June 2, since census was taken June 1.

1890 John T. Gatley 243 South 5th, Philadelphia
1892 same as above, with bartender added

1898 John T. Gatley, 315 Water, restaurant
For two years between 1887 and 1891, Ancestry lists John T. at 223 Point, in Camden, NJ, with occupation listed as saloon.
The 315 Water Street was also the address (either home or business)of his Sister Sarah and her husband James Harwood. It is also the address given by James Harwood's Sister (yet another Sarah) when she gave a deposition in the will contesting of Joseph Gatley.
In 1870 census there is a 40 year old John Gatley listed along with a 10-year olf Sarah Gatley living at 145 south 4th Street, Philadelphia. There were other people in the home, but no other Gatley's were listed. We wonder if that was a mistake and should have read Joseph instead of John.
