Notes for Pierre Arsenault: Pierre Arsenault arrived in Port Royal, NS, Acadia in 1671. ? on ship L'Oranger The ancestor of the Acadian branch of the Arsenault family, Pierre Arsenault was born in France around 1646. He arrived in Acadia shortly after the 1671 census.
Although his place of birth in France is not known, thesurname was a common one in the Poitou and Charentes region during the 17th century. Some spelled the surname Arsonneau.
In Acadia, Pierre married twice. First, around 1675, he married Marguerite Dugas, daughter of Abraham Dugas and of Marguerite Doucet of Port-Royal. Second, around 1685, he married Marie Guerin, daughter of Franois and of Anne Blanchard.
Pierre seconded Jacques Bourgeois in the establishment of the Beaubassin settlement where he lived in 1680. Several of his children settled at Ile Saint-Jean (Prince Edward Island) during the mid 1730s.
Pierre died around 1710. The descendants of Pierre Arsenault are numerous, particularly on Prince Edward Island, in the Gaspe, in Louisiana and in New Brunswick.
Beaubassin, Acadia The area known as Fort Lawrence was originally called "Beaubassin" by the French in 1671 and "Chignecto" by the Indians. It was the first major settlement to be established by the French outside of Port Royal in Acadia. It grew in stature and eventually became the center of government for all of Acadia in 1684. So it was not only the geographical center of Acadia but the administrative center also.
It was attacked and burnt by an American mercenary Ben Church in 1696 and again in 1704. After 1704, all was reasonably peaceful until 1750, with the Acadians trading with both Louisbourg and Boston. On the arrival of the British in 1750 the whole area was burned to the ground by the French and the population was driven into exile across the river to Point Beausejour (in what is now known as New Brunswick), by the French priest Abbe La Loutre.
