Some years later, but I don't know when, the death occurred in Hong Kong of Hugh B. L. Dowbiggin, husband of Hilda (nee Clark) and father of Joan, Richard, Anne and June. This was also in the columns of the Telegraph. C.M.G. means Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. I believe I read in the Who's Who years ago that one of these gentlemen was a high ranking police officer in Ceylon. From Jane Layard Herasimenko: My grandfather was Col. Interested in any historical info, occupations etc. Also from Jane: Hugh married Hilda Gertrude Mallard Clark, July 19, 1913 in Warwickshire England Now this is pretty sketchy as to dates but facts are pretty accurate as told by my mother to me: Hugh's father a minister Church of England living in Ceylon (Crown Colony) all very British....as his father before him. Of course received proper British education.....something useful like banking, ministering, doctoring etc.or if totally useless commissioned to Army etc. in Hugh's case banking....joined Bank of England in Hong Kong when 18 or 19 years of age. also worked as Gold and Bullion broker and Stock broker. Married Hilda whose father was a barrister and doctor in Hong Kong. He (Hugh) lived in Hong Kong all his life, there when the Japanese ransacked the island (lost house on The Peak ) and was interned in Camp Stanley Prison Camp for three years. Went back to HK. Was a 33 degree Mason, very active in Missions to Seamen, Diocesan Boys' School and other charities. He was the Clerk of the Course of the Happy Valley Race Track. Retired British Army Col. Was awarded OBE was to do with his work with Red Cross, rebuilding HK etc. I believe. His wife and family primarily lived in England since before the war and he visited them and they him. Had four children all born in Hong Kong but educated in England all of whom are still alive except Anne (Jane's mother) : 1. Also from Jane: You will note that Hugh's third name is Layard....this is a family name that dates back to 1604 with Ramond de Caumont de Layard of Montflaquin in Duchy of Agen Province of Guienne whose son, Pierre de Ramond de Layard 1666-1713 fled to Holland and later England. NOTE: Lieut. General Fredrick (Fred) Peter Layard did research on this in 1888 and I am just getting into certifying the line through the Mormon files. Well it appears the Layards may have had an Irish connection as follows quoted from Fred's research: -"as early as1517 we find an Art MacDermot Layard living in Ireland. In the "Search Department" of the Public Record Office, in Rolls Court in London, in the 9th report of the Commissioners on Irish MSS. (note from Jane: do you know what MSS or MS stands for?) , Part 11. of 1884, is a "List of MSS. which belong to His Grace the Duke of Leinster at Carton, Maynooth, in Ireland. In which is listed a mention is made of Red book which belonged to Gerald, 9th Earl of Kildare, a transcript of which book was made for George, 16th Earl, by William Roberts, Ulster King of Arms." and in it a notation is mentioned re the giving of a "bay I " (horse) to Art MacDermot Layard. In 1888 Fred contacted a gentleman of the name of Henry St. George Layard, Esq., M.D., living on his property at Hollymount, Cardonagh, co. Donegal, a descendant, he told Fred. of a Huguenot refugee who settled in Ireland between 140 and 170 years ago (dated from 1888) bearing the same Arms as those of the name who fled to England. Unfortunately Dr. Henry St. George Layard did not remember or know the christian name of his refugee ancestor but he told Fred the surname was sometimes spelt Layars.
