GERRISH FISK THURBER WOOD SAMSON
GERRISH FISK THURBER WOOD SAMSON
Updated September 6, 2000I live in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts.I moved here from Boise, Idaho in 1980.In 1989, my great uncle Gerrish Thurber told me that I had a direct ancestor (William Gerrish) among theoriginal settlers of Newbury in 1632!I started looking and soon found many other ancestors from many of the nearby towns like Wenham, Salem, Rowley, and Hampton, NH.Some members of these families migrated to New Hampshire and Vermont and then to New York, New Jersey, and Michigan.I have since found several 17th century homes and 18th century gravestones of these ancestors in Essex County.I have started a Gerrish Genealogy and I am video taping the houses and gravestones I have found.Among the names I am interested in are Gerrish, Fisk(e), Thurber, Wood, Bartlett, Batchellor, Baum, Chapman, Clough, Coffin, Dole, Elkins, Emery, Fogg, Gage, Hale, Noyes, Samson, Sewall, Tyler, and Whipple. My great great great grandmother, Mary Bartlett Gerrish of Boscawen, NH,is a pivotal character being the daughter of two Gerrish first cousins and marrying bothJefferson Gage Thurber and SamuelWood whose offspring ( Edward Gerrish Thurber and Sarah Augusta Wood)again married in the next generation. The son of E. G. Thurber and S. A. Wood was Samuel Wood Thuber who married Bertha Fisk.Samuel and Bertha are my great grandparents.Bertha is a direct descendent of Henry Samson of the Mayflower. The Fisk family also started out in Wenham, Essex County. The Wood family emigrated to Rowley, Essex County. The Thurbers started out in Rehoboth, MA.I am also a member of the Amesbury Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends and interested in Quaker history.John Greenleaf Whittier was a member of this meeting and connects to my family tree as a third cousin six times removed. | |
