Notes for William HAMMOND Jr.:
William Hammond's will, dated August 6, 1806, was proved in Anne Arundel on October 12, 1810. His estate was somewhat involved, as he stated in his will that the land which he had sold to John Madden of about 10 acres at £20 per acre lying between "my dwelling and Elk Ridge Landing" and when paid by John Madden the proceeds were to be divided among his children. The same condition was expressed for the land in Liberty Town sold Richard Coale which was the land devised the testator by his uncle Upton Sheredine, the land inherited as one of the heirs of his brother, James Hammond, also "Larkins' Adventure" in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and 1,000 acres in Ohio County, Virginia. The landed estate in Anne Arundel County was to be kept intact for the benefit of his wife and children until the youngest reached 21 years. Each child was to receive his inheritance at the age of 21.
To his Aunt Tabitha Dorsey $20.00 yearly for her support, and his niece Sarah Cover was bequeathed a legacy of $100.00. Freedom was granted his slaves at specified ages.
The executors so named were his sons Larkin, James and William Hammond and his friend Dr. Richard Pindell. The witnesses were John Dorsey of Caleb, Larkin Dorsey and Richard Dorsey of Caleb.
At probation his son, William Hammond, refused to act, but requested that letters of administration be issued to Mrs. Mary Hammond and her sons, Larkin and James Hammond. Dr. Richard Pindell furthermore refused. James Hammond, son, renounced all rights of administration, but requested that letters be issued to "my mother and brother Larkin Hammond". The widow renounced the provisions, but letters of administration were ultimately granted to her and Larkin Hammond.
On March 19, 1811, Larkin Hammond was made the guardian of his brother, Thomas Hammond, with bond of £1,000 assured by Richard Ridgely and John Sprigg Belt.
The first account was filed on February 8, 1816, showing the value of the personal estate appraised at $5,514.71 on November 27, 1810, including 34 negroes. After certain fees were paid, a balance of $4,453.59 remained.
By 1815 it was realized that the personal estate was insufficient to pay all outstanding indebtedness. Consequently, Sarah Hammond, Larkin Hammond, James Hammond, Caroline Hammond, William Hammond, Mary Ridgely and Rebecca Hammond, all of age, petitioned the Court of Chancery as the heirs of their father, stating that Elizabeth Ann Hammond and Thomas Hammond were also heirs under the age of 21 years.
