ETTY LEE FENTRESS:
Letter from Naomi Gamble Harrell January 14, 1980

This ia a short sketch of the life of my mother, Betty Fentress Gamble. She was born near Waco, Texas on March 6, 1885. I can hardly believe that she would have been 95 years old this month.

She got to live such a short time - only to June 26, 1929. Mama (as I called her) came to what is now Tillman County, Oklahoma when she was 16 years old with her mother, Mary Frances Lippard Fentress, her brother John Bunyon Fentress (known as Uncle Bun) and his wife Miranda (Tanner) Fentress. Uncle Bun and his wife soon returned to Waco from whence they had come, but mama and her mother stayed on. Another brother of mama's, Matthew Sylvester Fentress Uncle Doc) and his family had previously left the vicinity of Waco and had migrated to Oklahoma. Margaret Lovejoy Neely, Route 3, Box 60l, Wichita Falls, Texas has a small booklet written by her Uncle Rufus Fentress, telling of his wandering with his father, mother and siblings from Waco to Oklahoma, back to Texas and back to Oklahoma again. They were in a covered wagon with the chickens in a coup and a cow tied on behind.

Mama and the relatives with whom she was living, lived on a tract of land 8 miles due west of what became Frederick, Oklahoma. Papa, Charles R. Gamble, who had migrated with some cousins from Tennessee, lived in a dugout about 1 mile west of Mama. I am sure that there were few young people in the area and I know that Mama sorely missed living at Waco where she had so many cousins and friends. She told me that she had great fun square dancing. She played the guitar and sang plaintive songs. She also chorded well on the piano. She had a very good alto voice; could read any music by sight. I used to be so proud of her when she would lead songs at singing conventions. As she grew up at Waco she must have had access to music classes of some kind or else it was something inherited. Uncle Doc and his daughter, Doris, also loved to sing and Doris played the organ. Many Sunday afternoons were spent with Doris playing the organ or piano with Mama and Uncle Doc singing. Mama was a pretty woman about 5 ft. 6 in. tall and slender. Her hair was very dark and she had hazel eyes. Her cheek bones were very high. She always told me her folks came from Holland via Pennsylvania. We will always remember our mother as a great and compassionate person, very capable and one who did the best with what she had. She was a great Christian lady, always ready to do good works and to teach her neighbors the great truths of the Bible.
