BEULAH EDNA DEVENY                              April 25, 1945

After an extended illness, Miss Beulah Edna Deveny, age 65, died April 25, 1945 at the Deveny residence in the Pleasant Hill Community near Axtell. Miss Deveny was born on February 2, 1888 to Joseph Grayson and Mary Ann Parrish Deveny. Her entire life was spent on the land on which she was born and she was affectionately known throughout the neighborhood as “Miss Beulah”. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. Services were held on April 22, 1945 at the Compton Funeral Home Chapel at 11th and Austin Avenue, Waco with interment following in Concord Cemetery East of Waco. Survivors include brothers, Robert Luther Deveny of Dallas, Roy Young Deveny of Axtell-Pleasant Hill community, Charles Albert Deveny of Corsicana; sisters Mrs. Will (Mollie) Warwick of Axtell, Mrs. Mattie E. Fentress of Oklahoma, Mrs. Edgar (Josie) Heifner of Corsicana and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by one brother, James Clyde Deveny, who died in 1891 and one sister, Mrs. Leon R. (Ethel Mae) Barron in 1931. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

ROY YOUNG DEVENY, SR.                              September 9, 1956

Roy Young Deveny, Sr. age 68, died September 9, 1956 at a local hospital. Services will be held Tuesday, September 11th, at 10:00 A.M. at the Compton Funeral Home Chapel at 11th & Austin Avenue, with Minister John Staley officiating with interment following at Concord Cemetery. Mr. Deveny was born February 23, 1888 to Joseph Grayson and Mary Ann Parrish Deveny. With the exception of time spent serving with the US Armed Forces in France during World War I, he lived and spent his life farming the land where he was born in the Pleasant Hill Community. On April 18, 1922 he married Fannie Cathey, who survives him. Other survivors includes one daughter, Charlotte Deveny Larsen and her husband Evald Storm Larsen, one grandson, Roy Deveny Larsen, all of the Pleasant Hill Community, brothers Robert Luther Deveny of Dallas, Charles Albert (Bert) Deveny of Corsicana, one sister Mattie E. Fentress of Oklahoma, and nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by one son, Roy Young Deveny, Jr. on October 25, 1944, who was killed while serving in the US Navy in the naval Battle at Leyte Gulf in the South Pacific. Pallbearers are nephews, Joe S. Deveny of Waco, Ambrose Deveny of Dallas, Claude Warwick of Axtell, Foy W. Warwick of Axtell, Lee Heifner of Corsicana, and Clyde Heifner of Corsicana.

MRS. ROY YOUNG (FANNIE CATHEY) DEVENY            April 15, 1989

Mrs. Fannie was a school teacher at the Pleasant Hill School in McLennan County near Axtell. My father, Lewis Fentress, and my mother Letha Mae Collier attended school there. When the 1930 Census from that area was published, I was pleased to find the text very legible and the census taker's name listed as Fannie Deveny.

This family was instrumental in establishing the Concord Cemetery Association.

Mrs. Roy Y. (Fannie Cathey) Deveny, age 95, of Axtell, Texas died Saturday, April 15, 1989. Graveside service will be held at 3:00 P.M. Monday at Concord Cemetery East of Bellmead with Minister David Berryman officiating. Mrs. Deveny was born January 27, 1894 at Leon Junction in Coryell County, the daughter of Henry Rutherford and Lovedy Elizabeth Cathey. She married Roy Young Deveny April 18, 1922 who preceded her in death on September 9, 1956. They were preceded in death by their son, Roy Young Deveny, Jr. on October 25, 1944, who was killed while serving in the US Navy during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Survivors are one daughter, Charlotte D. Larsen and husband Evald S. Larsen of Axtell, one grandson, Roy Deveny Larsen and wife Victoria, two great grandchildren, Matthew Evald and Katherine Janette Larsen all of Austin, one sister, Mrs. Jack M. Terry, Sr. of Houston, and several nephews and nieces. Mrs. Deveny was a school teacher for many years, a homemaker, a member of the Church of Christ since 1910, and active in community affairs, including helping to establish the Axtell Home Demonstration Club, The Axtell 4-H Club including serving in various official capacities for both as well as serving on the McLennan County Home Demonstration and 4-H Councils. Memorials may be made to Concord Cemetery Association or Caritas of Waco. The family will be at the Larsen residence on the Corsicana Highway.
