Mary Sandal Webb (b. November 18, 1858, d. July 18, 1929)
Notes for Mary Sandal Webb:
My grandfather, Richard Dykes wrote of his mother: Besides mothering her own children, our dear mother had the responsibility of mothering three of her sister's children who were left orphan's in 1900 by the death of their mother, Lou Osborn. These were Clyde, Ava, wife of Van McConnell, Ada, wife of Sampson Pope, who lives in Oklahoma. Then the two children of brother Charley who was orphaned by the death of their father and mother in 1918, being Thelma, who is now married and living in Minnasota and Charlene, who lives in Waskom, Texas. And every one of these children seemed to love her as dear as they would their own mother, for to them, she was the only mother they ever really ever knew.
Grandma Dykes loved her grandchildren and always kept a big box of sugar cookies ready for them to eat when they gathered at her home on Sundays. Often she would fill a iron pot or kettle with fresh greens and pork and set them on to simmer until they were ready for the day's meal. She was a devoted member of the Primitive Baptist Church, a constant and loving companion of her husband, and a true friend to all of her neighbors. When one of her sister's passed away during the flu epidemic, she raised three of her children as mentioned above. Then also raised the two daughters of her brother, Charlie, when he and his wife died. Grandma Dykes passed away July 13, 1929 and is buried at Hopewell Cemetary and in June 1935, M.B. was buried beside her.
