Notes for James K. Phaup:
James K. Phaup is listed in the 1850 census as a 22 year old cabinetmaker, living with his father, John. Later that year on August 22, 1850, we found a record of his marriage to Mary Elizabeth Johnson. They left for Rockwall County, Texas, fairly soon thereafter, because their daughter, Ellen was born on July 4, 1851, on the "75th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence." Then they returned to Christian County, where four other children were born. The next record shows James K. to be enrolled on September 5, 1861 into Company A, 3rd Regiment, Kentucky Mounted Volunteers for an enlistment of 3 years. His age is listed as 34. This would place his birthday sometime between the Spring of the year (when the 1850 census was taken he was only 22) and September 5th, when he had already turned 34. He wasn't actually mustered in until December 13, 1861. Company A was commanded by Captain John W. Breathitt. The Regimental Commander was Colonel James S. Jackson. James K. Phaup, according to war records, "died at or near Sacramento, in the State of Kentucky, on the 28th day of December A.D. 1861, having been killed by the enemy in a skirmish which occurred at Sacrement at that time while in the service of the United States."
