Descendants of Edward Broaddus Generation No. 1 1. Edward1 Broaddus was born Abt. 1672 in Wales, and died Abt. 1749 in King and Queen Co., VA. He married (1) Dollwyddelan Gwynn 1713 in Gloucester Co., VA. He married (2) Mary Shipley Abt. 1725 in Mathews Co., VA. Notes for Edward Broaddus: The following passage is derived from "The History of St. Mark's Parish:" "The late distinguished Rev. John A. Broaddus, writing of his family a few years previous to his death, says that the name Broaddus was originally Broadhurst. Although of Anglo-Saxon origin, those who bear it, tradition says, came to the United States from Wales. The progenitor of the family in this country was Edward Broaddus who settled on Gwynn's Island in the Piankitank River, near its junction with the Rappahannock. The exact time of his coming is not known, but it must have been as early as the early part of the 18th century, as in 1715, he moved to Caroline County, then King and Queen County, where he continued to reside up to the time of his death. ...These children of Edward Broaddus and his two wives have left a large number of descendants in Caroline and Culpeper Counties and in other portions of Virginia and elsewhere throughout the United States, some of whom have become men of prominence and distinction, especially as educators and ministers of the gospel. Among these, Andrew, the first of the name, Andrew, his son, both of whom were born and died in Caroline County, Edmund, William F., his brother, and John A., Son of Edmund, all three natives of Culpeper, may be notably mentioned." Like the most of his name, he joined the Baptist church when young, and like quite a number, not long afterwards was ordained a minister, teaching and preaching at the same time. Commencing preaching and teaching in Virginia, where he had a school and a church at Middleburg, and other places at different times. Wm. F. Broaddus afterwards moved to Kentucky and taught and preached in Lexington and Shelbyville. Notes for Edmund Broaddus: The following passages are derived from ___________: "Of the many men of prominence that Culpeper County has furnished, few have possessed more merit and ability than Edmund Broaddus. Born at a time when schools were scarce and the most of them that existed, of the "Old Field" order, he received only an ordinary education, yet so superior his intellect, and studious his habits, that, even while a comparatively young man, as a thinker and debater he took a prominent stand among the leading men of his day. By vocation Mr. Broaddus was a farmer. He also taught a country school for several years. In politics he was originally a Democrat, but left that party upon the "Removal of the Deposits" by Gen. Jackson, and afterwards became an "Old Line Whig," and a great admirer and earnest supporter of Henry Clay. Mr. Broaddus was a man of modest demeanor, excellent judgement, and rare insight into the character and motives of men. To the latter, united with his ability as a speaker, and the thorough confidence of his constituents, in his integrity, may be attributed the fact that, for twenty years - with one of two exceptions, when he declined to be a candidate - he represented the County of Culpeper in the House of Delegates, and was never defeated in any races he made before the people. During his several terms of office, no member served his constituents more faithfully and efficiently, and none more thoroughly commanded the respect of his fellow members, and exerted a greater influence over them. Like the most of his name, Mr. Broaddus was a Baptist, and at the associations, and other general meetings of that denomination, always took a prominent and leading part in their deliberations, thus becoming an important factor in shaping the proceedings of these bodies. He died in Charlottesville, Virginia, whither he had gone several years prior thereto, mainly for the purpose of educating his son, the great and good John A." Microfilm: Roll 1688, page 178 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Under the History Section of the book "The Community of Linden," the following passage is found: "While writing the family history of the Daniel Looney, Jr. family, it was learned that one of the children had been named Clarence Linden Looney. Clarence was born Feb. 24, 1880 and died April 18, 1881. The use of the non-family name for this son was interesting and further research was made. It was found that he had been named for Clarence Linden Broadus, an early settler in the Linden area. In fact, the Linden post office had been named for this prominent man. The Broadus family was originally from Wales and was one of the first families in Virginia. Many members of the family were ministers, including Edmund Broadus, the grandfather of Clarence Linden. Edmund Broadus served fourteen years in the Virginia assembly. James Madison Broadus, the father of Clarence Linden, married Ellen Barbour Gaines, whose father was a Captain in the War of 1812. Ellen was a sister of General Gaines, one of the most famous commanders of that war. James Madison and his wife were residents of Alexandria, Virginia and he died there in 1880. Clarence Linden Broadus was born there, near Culpeper Court House, Culpeper County, on January 24, 1833. In Frederick City, Maryland, on Sept. 3, 1851, he married Sarah J. Kemp, daughter of Thomas B. and Rebecca (Stover) Kemp. She was born in Page County, Virginia on January 24, 1834. They had two children, T. Madison, born May 18, 1856, who was a teacher, farmer and carpenter at Linden, West Virginia, and the daughter, Ellen Barbour, born Sept. 5, 1858, who married William B. McGlothlin on Nov. 17, 1879 in Roane County. Clarence Linden Broadus served through the Civil War in the Confederate Army, holding a Captain's commission, fighting in both battles at Bull Run, also at Kernstown, Antietam, Winchester, McDowell, Roods Hill, Cross Keys, Port Republic, etc. He lost his right arm in a cavalry fight at Brandy Station on June 9, 1863, by a shell. He returned to duty in seven weeks and served as a scout until the end of the war. He taught school in Roane County and was County Superintendent of free schools for two years. He became a member of Linden Lodge No. 83, A. F. and A. M. and served as Master of the Lodge. Location of his grave is not known." (Submitted by Gene F. Elmore, Sr.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In "Bishop's History of Roane County," the following passage is found on pg. 272. "One other character of this district claims special mention: Clarence Linden Broadus. He made no farm worth mentioning, but he roused the spirit of education in the district and emphasized the value of our free schools throughout the county; served as County Superintendent of Schools one term, 1873-1875. He was the son of James Madison Broadus and wife, Ellen B. (Gaines) Broadus, and born in Virginia, near Culpeper Court House, January 24, 1833; came to Roane County only a few years before 1873, when he became County Superintendent of Schools; he had two children, T. Madison, born in Taylor County, West Virginia, taught school here and worked at the carpenter trade at Linden; the other child, a daughter, Ellen B., became the wife of William B. McGlothlin, of Roane County. Clarence Linden Broadus was a Captain in the Confederate service, in which service he lost an arm, near the shoulder; he was always referred to by his acquaintances as 'Captain Broadus.' We are persuaded that it was he who gave the name Linden to the United States Post Office established at the community center near Youngs Mill, now known as the village of Linden." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ More About Clarence Linden Broaddus: Census: 1880 Roane Co., WVA Census Fact 1: January 24, 1833, Born near the Culpeper Court House. Notes for Saley E. McGlothlin: Saley's birth certificate shows her name as being "Saley E. McGlothlin;" however, her death certificate, which was issued only three months after her birth, indicates that her name is "Sola McGlothlin." There was no cause of death on the certificate and no indication of where her parents were from. At that time, it was apparently not an important matter to get the proper spelling of names for these certificates. More About Saley E. McGlothlin: Fact 1: Died in infancy. 136 iii. Stella Mildred McGlothlin, born September 22, 1888 in Beech Fork, Calhoun Co., WVA; died April 02, 1921 in Clarendon, Arlington Co., VA. She married James Daniel Hall August 22, 1914 in Alexandria City, VA. Notes for Stella Mildred McGlothlin: Stella's middle name is shown on her birth certificate as "Manervia;" however, on her daughter's, Elaine's, birth certificate her middle name is shown to be "Mildred." Either someone misheard her parents when they gave her name at the time of her birth, or she just didn't like "Manervia" and decided on "Mildred" instead. I believe that someone made a mistake on the birth certificate, and Stella's middle name was actually "Mildred." I think this because she apparently went by the name of Stella Mildred McGlothlin and even named my grandmother, her daughter, "Mildred." Elaine's birth certificate also indicates that Stella and James D. reside in Clarendon, VA at the time of her birth Stella's death certificate lists her last place of residence as 707 Wilson Blvd., Clarendon, VA. She died in Emergency Hospital in Washington D. C. on April 02, 1921. The cause of death was emphysema thoracis & pulmonary tuberculosis both due to myocardial insufficiency. She had surgery on March 30-31 and was in the hospital for six (6) days before she died. She was buried in Falls Church, VA on April 04, 1921. On the death certificate, her father is listed as Wm. McGlothlin born in W. Va, and her mother is listed as Ellen Broadus born in W. Va (or W. Pa). IN AN EMAIL FROM VICKI COLE ON OCT. 14, 1999, SHE WRITES: "I just received a marriage certificate for James and Stella. That Stella really liked to throw people off the track -- I'm starting to think she was trying to cover up her background. She lists on her marriage license that she was born in Patterson, New Jersey!! I checked an atlas to see if there was a Patterson, WVA, but there was none. She does state she was 25 years old, which matches her birth certificate -- but, of course, a few years later, she lists herself as 25 on Elaine's birth certificate. Anyway, they married on August 22, 1914 in Alexandria, VA. This is one month before she turns 26. It is also 11 days after James turned 26, but he lists himself as being 25. Strange. Maybe he forgot he had just had a birthday. But something else different, James lists that he was born in Houston, Texas! How probable is that. But he's the one who wrote it . It was other's who indicated he was born in Polk Co. at a later date. Should we assume he is correct? Do we have any indications his parents lived in Houston. What is that -- Harris County? James and Stella both resided in Washington, D.C. James was a "Clerk" James gives his parents as "John and Martha" -- no last names -- and Stella doesn't even give her parents names at all - which leads me to believe she was hiding. You know I've never been able to find her or her parents on the 1900 or 1910 Census Soundexes for VA, WVA and I may have looked at D.C."
