letter written by Daniel McAfee, son
of Dudley, grandson of Duncan.
To his Excellency, the Governor General of British Provinces in North
America.
May it please your Excellency, my Grandfather Duncan McAfee came to
America a private soldier under General Wolff. Was at the battle of
Quebec. Settled afterward at New York and died there.
At the commencement of the American Revolution, his eldest son then
being a youth, enlisted for his King, was raised to the rank of
Lieutenant, was taken with his regiment to New Brunswick; was disbanded
at the close of the war; returned to New York and married in 1795. He
came to this country now for himself and wife and four children land
amounting to 1100 acres settled about the river Thames in the London
District.
(note:This group left New York and departed for their new homes in
Canada in 1796)
He then went for this family was taken sick and not able to return to
this country for 3 years. During this time a Government Grant had been
made to Col. Talbot and my fathers beautiful location had fallen
undisputed into the hands of the still surviving sick old Colonel.
My poor father still without the means of a living again volunteered
into his Majesty's service under Col. McLane at York now Toronto, was
duly discharged by an accident, lost his discharge and soon afterward
died. No kind representation of the fondly loved British Crown could
stand and shake the poor honest subject by the hand.
At the beginning of the American war, myself and two brothers
volunteered for our country. I was under the Nobel and ever lamented
Gen. Brock to go from Ft. Erie in an open boat to Detroit for
the capture of Gen. Hull. I was at the battle of Queenston, saw the body
of my brave commander a few minutes after he had fallen, but fought with
the Highland spirit by the side of his successor till the victory was ours.
At the close of the War, I was honorably free and was entitled to some
reward for my laborious services, but in consequence of the misrule in
the provinces then and ever after still but short administration of Lord
Durham the rights of the people and interest of our country were
overlooked as your Excellency must now be well assured and I for one may
have never received anything in the shape of a remuneration from the
crown -
With the confidence begotten in me yesterday by the fond
conversation generous bearing of the Nobel Earl of Elgin with the humble
Canadian farmers, I have ventured upon this short history and earnestly
pray your Excellency to consider my cause.
I am an old man, reside on the banks of the Niagra, on no land except 5 acres
around my cottage. If a portion of the Government reserve at Ft. Erie could be given to me it would call forth my utmost gratitude.
I am the father of six children. The narrow place which is now our home
was the birthplace of my wife 50 years ago and has never passed out of
her family. Since a true Canadian she loves the British Monarchy with
enthusiasm - if nothing else shall be granted may the promised medal at
least shall be proudly worn in memory of the gallant hero Brock.
I am your Excellency's dutiful and humble servant.
Daniel McAfee
Bertie, Sept. 13. 1849
