The Jews of Bukhara and Bukharian Jewish History

The descendants of Rabbi Yosef Maman (Mammon)(Ha'Ma'aravi)(1741-1822)

In 1793, Rabbi Yosef Maman(Mammon)traveled from Safed, Israel to Bukhara to collect funds for yeshivot in the Holy Land. Upon his arrival, Rabbi Maman was disappointed to find that many Bukharan Jews were lacking in their observance of religious customs and Jewish law. Rabbi Maman decided to remain in Bukhara to devote the rest of his life to re-educate and revive the Jewish population's observance and faith in Judaism. While in Bukhara, Rabbi Maman married and had four children. Due largely to Rabbi Yosef Maman's influence, many Bukharan Jews made aliyah to the Holy Land in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century.

Over the last few decades many attempts were made to compile a comprehensive Mammon Family Tree. Unfortunately, most efforts remained unfinished or incomplete with many branches of the Mammon Family unrecorded.

It has been a long time dream of David Mammon and Jeffrey Mammon both of Toronto, Canada to research, compile, record and produce the most comprehensive Mammon Family Tree available for present and future generations to enjoy. By collaborating their efforts of mixing old and new technology, including the compiling of family branch information by hand, corresponding with relatives around the world by letter mail and telephone, using family tree software programs, e-mail and the Internet, David Mammon and Jeffrey Mammon's dream of compiling, editing and publishing the Mammon Family Tree has finally been achieved. The creation of an Internet Mammon Family Tree Home Page Web Site is now a reality. This is an ongoing project with updates.

Please feel free to e-mail us at jmammon@yahoo.com to correct any errors or omissions. We thank all those who submitted to us updated information about their branch of the Mammon Family. Without your cooperation and regular updates this web site will no longer be able to provide current family information.

Today, many of Rabbi Yosef Maman's descendants spell their last name "Mammon" and reside mainly in Canada, USA and Israel.

We hope you enjoy this site and please visit often. We are updating and planning on adding many new links and features on the Mammon Family and about the Jews of Bukhara. Please scroll down and click on the links below to view the most up to date Mammon Family Tree. Please see "Related Files" to view an Index of all names (A-Z) included on the Mammon Tree.
