Served as Finance Clerk: "Performed a variety of financial clerical duties for the 4th Finance Disbursing Section in Finance. Computed and processed vouchers for pay, allowances, and travel expenses of military and civilian personnel. Processed claims of French civilians. Prepared schedules of collections and disbursements. Maintained cash book, and other disbursement record. Acted as finance courier and delivered money to different disbursing offices. Received receipts for money delivered. Supervised 4 enlisted men, 3 civilians, and 9 prisoners of War in their routine duties."
Returned to U.S. as Tec. 5th Grade; arrived at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey on "U.S.S. Victory Ship."

The initials "J.D." were always claimed by J.D. and Rosa not to stand for any given names. There has, of course, been speculation about this since "James Doss" would fit very nicely.
J.D. took the surname of his stepfather, Paul Bailey Maness, sometime after 25 December 1925.
J.D. is listed as "Doss, J.T. Jr." in the 1920 census.
In J.D.'s army discharge papers he is listed as having hazel eyes, brown hair, 5'9", and 150 lbs.
