Descendants of Levi White, Sr.

Generation No. 1

1. LEVI1 WHITE , SR. was born 1798 in South Carolina, and died Abt. 1880 in Texas. He married ELIZA (BRUSTER) BREWSTER Abt. 1830 in South Carolina, daughter of JAMES BREWSTER and MARY SMITH.

Notes for L
EVI WHITE , SR.:

The surname White/Whyte is one of the fifty most common names found in Ireland.

The surname White is of several possible origins:
      1) Old English hwit, meaning 'white', denoting a person with fair complexion or light colored hair,
      2) Old English wiht, denoting a person who lived by a bend in a river or road, and
      3) Old English wait, a 'look-out post'.

White is one of the twenty-five most common names in England and Wales. Of Welsh origin, it is believed to have been taken from the ancient word Gwyn or Wynne, meaning "White." It is believed to have been given to its original bearer because of the color of his skin or hair. It is variously found in ancient records in the forms of White, Whyte, Whitt, and Wight. In Lowland Scotland the name comes from the Old English hwit, but in the Scottish Highlands, it is derived from the Gaelic name MacBille Bhain, "son of the fair youth or servant". White and Whyte were adopted by both MacGregors and Lamonts as colour names and is one of the fifty most common in Scotland.
Historically, it is said that the White family derives its descent from Roderick the Great 877 A.D., whose descendant, Rhys ap Tudor, King of South Wales, was slain in 1093; and from Otho, who lived in the time of Edward the Confessor, about 1042. Otho was the father of Walter Fitz Otho, who had Gerald Fitz Walter, who married Nesta, daughter of Rhys ap Tudor.
Nesta and Gerald Fitz Walter were the parents of Maurice Fitz Gerald, who had Walter White, the first known bearer of this surname.
This Walter was Knighted by Henry II in 1171. Robert White, of this line, was a Knight of Yorkshire in 1303. In 1394 Johannes White of North Colyngham, Nottinghamshire, is named in the list of the landed gentry of 1428. Robert White, merchant and mayor of the staple of Calais, made his home at various times in the counties of Hampshire, Kent, and Surrey in the middle of the fifteenth century. Robert, son of Robert of Calais, had two sons, Thomas and John. Thomas, son of Robert, married Agnes Richards and had four sons, George, John, Richard and Thomas, Jr. He was granted three manors in Somerset in 1556 by the king. John, son of Robert, bought lands in Tuxford, Nottinghamshire, and had a son, Thomas, who married Ann Cecil, eldest sister of William, Lord Burleigh. Two members of the White family removed to Ireland about the year 1171. They were Walter White and his brother William (?). Others of the family later made their homes in England.

Scots often named children by following a simple set of rules. Don't use these as a firm guide (there were often variations, for all sorts of reasons) but you may find that some of your ancestors used these too:

1st son named after father's father
2nd son named after mother's father
3rd son named after father

1st daughter named after mother's mother
2nd daughter named after father's mother
3rd daughter named after mother

Levi White was born about 1798 in South Carolina according to 1850 Conecuh County, Alabama Census. He was listed as a farmer with 100 acres of land, with his wife, Eliza Brewster, born abput 1812 in South Carolina, and their ten children. Eliza Brewster was the daughter was the daughter of James M. Bruster, veteran of War of 1812, and Mary (Polly) Smith. James M. Bruster was the son of Henry Bruster, born circa 1758 in Augusta County, Virginia, and Margaret Louisa Bowen, born about 1760 in Georgia. Henry died after 1816 in Clarke County, Alabama. Margaret died about 1817 in Sumter County, Alabama.

Below is the 1850 Conecuch County, Alabama Federal Census, with the proof of residency of my ancestors, Levi White and he wife, Eliza. Druery White was listed as a the five year old son of Levi White and his wife, Eliza. On this census, Levi White, was listed as 52 years old, born in South Carolina, and his mother was, Eliza, was age 38, born in South Carolina. There was 10 children living in the same household.
There was two more White families listed on this 1850 Conecuh County Federal Census; one was Willis White and the other was John White. They are most likely related to Levi since many families migrated together. I have seen conflicting information on other census which locate Levi White's birth location in Tennessee, so I'm researching all area to confirm whether this if this is the same Levi White, the father of Druery White.
The only reference I have found of a Levi White being born in 1798 was on a message posted at GenForum with the names of the children of Anderson White and Margery Puliam, who resided Georgia. This could be a possible link, but it is unproven. One of their children named Terrell White was born in Laurens County, South Carolina, so there is a possibility that other children was born in South Carolina.

From the Archives and Records Division, Texas General Land Office, Levi W. White received a certificated dated 3 Feb 1838 from Houston County Board of Land Commissions which stated that he immigrated in January 1836, and was granted one-third of a league (1,476.1 acres). He transferred 320 acres of this First Class Headright to Lodowick E.

Levi was issued Certificate No. 697 on 14 May 1855 by the Adjutant General for "having fought in the Battle of San Jacinto" a grant of 640 acres, which he transferred to F. S. Bodenhamer and A. T. Monroe on 2 June 1855. Levi was issued Bounty Certificate No. 3500 for 320 acres in Houston County on 2 May 1859, which was patented on 26 July 1861. A certificate was issued 12 Feb 1855 for unlocated balance of Certificate 3850/3951 of 1156 acres being the balance from Certificate 67. A transfer is shown to Darius H. Edens on 23 Oct 1858.

I submitted a portion of my genealogical research on the family of Levi W. White, born circa 1798, South Carolina, to the Heritage Book of Santa Rosa County. Levi married Elizabeth S. Bruster, born December 1812 in South Carolina, who is buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery near Jay. She was the daughter of James M.

Submitted by Deborah C. Biesbrock, Post Office Box 330175, Atlantic
Beach, Florida.

(1) The heirs receiving this patent settlement were those living in Century, Escambia County, Florida. The heirs living across the river in Jay, Santa Rosa County, were not contacted regarding this settlement.

This is all I have on Levi White and his wife Elizabeth Jameson White. My wife is descended from one of the 12 year old twins, Elizabeth. I would really like to know more about Levi and his family. According to the 1860 census and the USGS map Levi and his family lived where the little air port just south of Brewton is now. Other than that I haven't got any more than you yet, but I'm still looking.

Bill Smith and Mary Catherine Love-Smith

In the 1860 AL census Levi is listed as being a farmer, with $800 in real estate, and $1000 personal estate.
Reside: June 15, 1860, Nathansville, Conecuh Co., AL

According to Bill Smith research Levi White marrie Elizabeth Jamison.
In the 1880 Santa Rosa County, Florida Federal Census, his son, Levi White, Jr. listed his father birth location as Tennessee, and his mother, Eliza, who was living in the same household listed her birth location as North Carolina. So this leads to some confusion as to where exactly our ancestors was born, either South Carolina, North Carolina, or Tennesse.

I found this message at Genforum, at www.genealogy.com, and I adding this to my possible links to reseach for the South Carolina area where Levi listed his birth location on the 1850 Conecuh County, Alabama Census. I'm hope this will be a link to his ancestry.

Also to research more carefull are the name Isaac White buried in the Old Travis Cemetery in Escambia County, Alabama
Travis Cemetery (Old), Escambia Co.,AL
Travis Cemetery (Old)
Located about 5 miles from Brewton on County Road 55 (Travis Road).

Surveyed and contributed by Lygia Dawkins Cutts on June 10, 1997
Most of the graves in this cemetery are either unmarked or weathered so that they are not readable. Some have been marked with name only. If you have connections with anyone in this cemetery, I suggest that you refer to "Heastones and Heritages" by McFarland and Shelton. This book contains additional family info on this cemetery. I have also crossed referenced this cemetery with this book for names and dates that I could not read on some markers.

The following are in this cemetery but grave location is unknown:
TRAVIS, Nancy Elizabeth, daughter of Nicholas Stallworth & Mary Wilson Travis.
* *WHITE, Elizabeth, daughter of Joseph Joiner, widow of Nicholas Stallworth Travis, wife of Isaac White.**

Searching for any shred of info about Elizabeth Boone (b. ca 1750-1752) daughter of Samuel Boone, the older brother of Frontiersman Daniel Boone.

In September 1832, Elizabeth gave a deposition for her brother Samuel Boone, Jr., in his application for a pension for Revolutionary War service [he served in a South Carolina unit]: "Affidavit of Elizabeth White, Clark County, Kentucky, states that she now lives in Madison County, Kentucky, where she has resided for several years, that she is over 80 years of age and the widow of William White, deceased."

Presumed children of Elizabeth Boone White and her husband William White, Sr.:
1. Elizabeth Isabell White b. bet. 1760-1762, d. about 1815 m. John Bledsoe in 1780
2. Mary "Polly" White m. James Brooks
3. Rebecca White m. Isaac Wilcoxson
**4. Levi White m. Elizabeth Wood June 29, 1793 in Mason County, Kentucky
5. William White, Jr.

I need more information about William White, Jr. I think there might be a possibility link with William White, Jr., who was born in South Carolina during the time Samuel Boone, Sr., moved his family (including Elizabeth) away from North Carolina to escape Indian depredations to the relative safety of the more established settlements in South Carolina. I think it's possible that Elizabeth married William White, Sr., in South Carolina and that some of her children might have been born in South Carolina before Samuel Boone, Sr., took his whole family to Boonesborough.

I would really like to hear from some of you !! Thanks! Carolyn Carter Schiewe

I AM LOOKING FOR INFOMATION ON A LEVI WHITE FATHER OF JOHN D WHITE. THE INFO I HAVE IS FROM THE CONECUH CO. ALABAMA CENSUS 1850 AND 1860. LEVI MAY HAVE A BROTHER NAME WILLIS AND A SISTER NAME NANCY WHITE MALOY?

Emailed message from Robert Sapp, a researcher who is also a descendent of Levi White.

Gloria,
I went to a couple of family reunions a few years back and got some information. I missed the last couple. I don't think there has been one in a couple of years. I have a maybe on Levi's father. At one of the reunions, I got a paper that said he was Drury or Thomas White. b. 1752, d. 1806. I can't prove this yet but I am searching. I would like to compare all that we can.
Thanks
Robert

Notes for E
LIZA (BRUSTER) BREWSTER:
Eliza (Bruster) Brewster. Her last name was spelled on some documents as Bruster and on some Brewster According to Levi White's Pension and Land Bounty record, Eliza was the daughter of James M. Eliza (Bruster) Brewster married Levi White sometime before 1830, probably in the South or North Carolina.
Eliza was listed on the 1850 Conecuh County, Alabama Census as a 38 year female, born in South Carolina, although on a 1880 Santa Rosa County, Florida Census, she lists her birth location as North Carolina. She can be found living in the same household of her son, Levi White, age 26. Levi White, Sr. was not listed as living in the area. This would fit in with the information I received from Robert Sapp below:.

"Eliza, the wife of Levi White, Sr., was buried in Magnolia Spring Baptist Church Cemetery, Escambia County, Alabama, which is located in Santa Rosa County, Florida. Eliza went       with her husband, Levi (b. 1798) to Texas, where it is speculated that he died. I'm not sure when she returned to Florida, but her husband, Levi, remained in Texas. She returned       with 14 kids. I would have to find the notes on the story. I do remember it was said she was of hardy stock to return with the so many kids. That was the story I was      told. Of       course you know the Jay, Florida is just across the line from Flomaton and Brewton, Alabama and the other area of interest."
                  Robert Sapp

So according to this information Eliza Brewster White returned to Florida, but her husband, Levi White, remained in Texas, presumably dying there. He can no longer be found on any census for the Florida and Alabama region.
