Lucinda Shipley (Lucy) (daughter of Robert Shipley and Sarah Rachel Dorscy) was born July 01, 1761 in Bedford County, Virginia, and died 1825 in Mercer County, Kentucky. She married (1) James Hanks on 1781 in Virginia, son of Joseph Hanks and Ann Lee. She married (2) Henry Sparrow on April 30, 1790, son of James Wright Sparrow and Mary Unknown.

Lucy Shipley Hanks while a young girl of 16 living in Virginia from a reputable familly. Her brothers were not old enough to be soldiers in the Revolutionary War and her father was too old. Lucy had learned to read and writer quite well, while most of the men she knew could not sign their names and a few of her girl friends could rread. Lucy was the only member of her family who could do so.

On October 19, 1781, Lord Cornwallis surrendered his entire army to the joint Colonial-French forces in Williamsbery and Yorktown, Virginia. People from all over came to take part in the celebration. If Lucy was indeed one of the Virginia girls to ride to the scene of the surrender she might have met a young soldier named Henry Sparrow from Mecklenburg County; his ancestors lived near Tidewater and Yorktown.


Lucy Shipley was the youngest child of Robert Shipley and Sarah Rachel Dorcey. After her husband James Hanks died she lived with his parents Joseph Hanks and Ann Lee with James and her daughter Nancy Hanks. She moved with them to Kentucky and later married Henry Sparrow. Nancy went to live with her mother's sister and her husband Berry.

In 1790 Rachel and Lucy were in Kentuvky it appears robert Shipley Sr. (not taxed, 1792), George(witness 1791), Edward (taxed 1795), Naomi (killed by Indians) and Ann all went from NC to Kentucky 1790. Margaret stayed in Gaston County, NC-Robert Jr. in Halifax, VA.

Dennis Hanks said his Aunt elizabeth, mother Nancy and Lucy were sisters-Lucy was Lincoln's grandmother, Lucy was a sister-in-law.

Amanda Pilcher in 1922 said her grandfather, Henry Sparrow Fr.'s half-sister, Nancy Hanks, was the mother of Abraham Lincoln. Henry Jr. said he was a half-uncle of Lincoln.
