New Zealand Manktelow's:Information about Teresa O'Neill
Teresa O'Neill (b. 28 November 1837, d. 20 July 1922)
Notes for Teresa O'Neill:
Went to Moreton Bay Australia on Sabrina in 1855. Arrived in Sydney on 28th November 1855 but there was cases of typhus and smallpox on board so passengers were not cleared until 12 January 1856. Was not yet 15 years old and couldn't read or write.
Traveled to NZ with husband as part of Waikato Militia. Initially stayed in Onehunga but then travelled up river on the Bluenose. Described as a pretty vivacious Irish Girl, when the boat reached Hamilton she gave her baby (Theresa) to another woman and leapt overboard to wade ashore and be the first woman to land in Hamilton. "Nice" reports say she was anxious to be reunited with her husband ------ the reality is the officers wives were politely debating who would be first and Teresa being bloody minded Irish beat them to it. As aknowleged by the description of "her triumphant laughing face greeting the others as they landed"
After her husbands death she continued farming their 50 acres until she sold it in 1920 and moved to 29 Mays Road, Onehunga to live with her Daughter Elizabeth until her death.
