Elnathan Maples, born around 1807, is the earliest known ancestor of the Missouri Maples clan. We believe that Elnathan's parents, and their children, emigrated from Connecticut to Tennessee. There, Elnathan grew to manhood, married Mary Gilmore, and probably started his family. Eventually, Elnathan, and his budding family, emigrated to Missouri. Currently, the only clue we have to Elnathan's parentage is based upon his unusual name. In Connecticut, during the late 18th Century, there was a Methodist preacher with the name Elnathan (last name unknown). Reverend Elnathan's flock had a Deacon Maples (first name unknown). We believe that Deacon Maples may have named one of his sons Elnathan in honor of the good Reverend. Unfortunately, this is pure conjecture, since, other than hearsay, we have no documentation regarding this belief. Other parental roots that have been hypothesized for Elnathan Maples are various branches of the Tennessee Maples, especially William Maples, born around 1773, and Josiah Maples, born around 1782.
