| Descendents from France, England, and Germany, our families date back to Charost, Province of Berri, France; Hampshire, Middlesex, Surrey, and Yorkshire, England; and the Alsace and Schwarzwald (Black Forest) regions of France and Germany. Some of the surnames to be found include: Martin, Stansfeld, Hayden, Chastain, Lisman, Rednour, Alden, Gard, Kierstede, Thornton, Staton, Frederick, and Gnaedig. Through the Gard family, we trace our lineage back to Lord Stansfeld (Wyon Marion) who was born in 1030. Descending from noble lines of Brittany and Normandy, Lord Stansfeld was an ally of William the Conqueror during the early battles of England. The Hayden family came from England and settled on the east coast of America. John Hayden left England with 140 other passengers aboard the ship, Mary and John of London, and arrived at Dorchester, Massachusetts on May 30, 1630. His grandson, Samuel Hayden, married Priscilla Webb in 1713. Priscilla's great-grandparents, John and Priscilla (Mullins) Alden were passengers on the ship, Mayflower, when it made its historic voyage to Plymouth Rock in 1620. The famous poem, "The Courtship of Miles Standish", written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, is about the life of John and Priscilla (Mullins) Alden. Many of the Hayden family later became heavily involved in the Boston political landscape. William Hayden and five of his sons, John, Stephen, Enoch, Noah, and Hosea, served in the American Revolution. William served at Valley Forge in the Massachusetts 2nd Regiment. The Hayden family eventually moved through Pennsylvania and settled in Kentucky. Permelia Catherine Hayden, daughter of Noah and Unity C. (Patterson) Hayden was born on January 25, 1830 in Mercer County, Kentucky. As a Protestant Huguenot, Dr. Pierre Chastain escaped religious persecution by fleeing France and traveling through Switzerland, to Holland, and on to England. Pierre immigrated to America from Gravesend, England aboard the ship, Mary and Ann of London, arriving at the mouth of the James River on July 23, 1700 after 13 weeks at sea. He settled in Manakin Town, Virginia. The Chastains migrated west to southern Indiana in the late 1700's. My grandmother, Lina Chastain married Edgar Crawford and settled in Cale, Martin County, Indiana. Their daughter, Anna Kathryn Crawford, my mother, grew up near Freedom, Franklin Twp., Owen County, Indiana. The Rednour family came to America from the Alsace region of France. Descending from the Reuttenauer family of Alsace, Noah Henry Rednour was born in Virginia and migrated westward settling in Owen County, Indiana as a chairmaker. Noah married Permelia Catherine Hayden on May 29, 1845 in Orange County, Indiana. A son, Noah, Jr., was a soldier in the Civil War having fought in the Indiana 19th Regiment in several major battles including "The Battle of the Wilderness" in 1864. He was wounded twice during the war which affected him the remainder of his life. Another son, Samuel Elias Rednour, born in 1863 after his father died, became a piano-tuner tradesman and traveled southern Indiana. Peter and Maria Elizabeth (Linxweiler) Lisman left Schwarzwald, Germany in the mid 1700's for a new life in America. A son, Peter Cartwright Lisman, was born shortly after arriving in America in 1786. The family moved west to Indiana and settled in Sullivan County, Indiana. Cora Lieu Lisman, the daughter of William Frederick Lisman and Martha Elizabeth Bedwell Padgett, married Samuel Elias Rednour and settled in Owen County, Indiana. Capt. Chas. Thos. Martin built Fort Martin on Crooked Run off of the Monongahela River in Monongalia County, VA (WV). His son Jesse had a son, Wm Martin, born in 1803. Wm Martin moved west and settled at Farmers Station, Franklin Township, Owen County, Indiana. His grandson, Shelva Quay Martin, married Freda Permelia Rednour and raised a large family. One of their children, Warren Austin Martin worked for the PA RR and raised 3 kids. |
