Going back to his earlier days, prior to the age of 23 and about when he married Mom, Dad played a piano or organ in the CMA Church in Vega Baja and other churches he and Mom attended. Dad told me he had a business-manufacturing luggage (steamer trunks) about the time he married Mom. They also had a furniture store. He joined the Army after World War I.Only recently did I learned from Haydee, my sister, his rank was Private First Class in the Military Band, 65th Infantry, Ballajar, Puerto Rico. I sent for his military records only to learn they were burned in the famous 1972 fire in St. Louis. On Septembe 10, 2001 they send me a letter with his service number (SSN 608 4012) saying he was provided an Honorable Discharge and joined on January 18, 1921 through February 07, 1924 as a Private. He was A musician in the Army and played trombone and other brass instruments. He played the organ and pianon prior to joining. He had a love for music, before and after the Army and was an organist and played in theaters for silent movies in New York and also played in the Orchestra at Carnage Hall in his early days.Read more regarding Dad in "Our Dad Don XX".
Dad and Mom helped found the first Spanish American Methodist Church in Miami, also called the Latin Center, with about 12 other people. Earlier, the church service was held in a small house near the location where a new church was built. Several times a week, we went to church because Mom and Dad were very active. The times had by all were an experience we will never forget. The events ranged from normal church activities to rehearsals for pageants like Christmas or Easter service. In addition there were funerals and weddings. Dad played the organ or piano or the trombone with others. Myra took singing lessons for years and she soloed in the chorus and sang at my wedding and others. It is interesting that while Dad helped to establish this church, his dad Ramon Martinez Sandoval did the same thing 40 years earlier and his grandfather Ramon was also active as a preacher. Dad was a background person and never took credit for anything and was silent and spoke with his actions.
Only recently, Haydee reminded me that Dad and Mom also helped to found a church in New York City by the same name of the church in Vega Baja, the Alianza Misionera Cristiana (CMA in English). Haydee gave me a picture dated September 28, 1935 of the Pastor Jose Franco. Dad follows in his Dad's footsteps and founds a second and third church where ever he and Mom go.
Dr. Alfaro led the Church we all attended and also worked for the Salvation Army. He and the Travelers Aid Society were always calling Mom and Dad to see if we could provide a place for people to stay that arrived in the U.S. and were stranded.
Dad experienced depression throughout his adult life following being hospitalized for lead poisoning in New York. Today he would have been treated with medicine and would have easily lead a very productive life, without these setbacks. Dad would have been diagnosed as manic-depressive (bipolar) today. This affliction explains why Dad was so productive, creative and humorous at times and at other times was dispirited. God Bless you Dad.
