Cert. Nac. Propio - Book #16,Folio 244,inscipcion numero 1. Jose Rivera Civil Registrar. Born at home. Witnesses were Jose Rivera Miranda and Jose Acevedo Pears (Peréz?) from Manati. Also an unknown J. Lopez Sicardo signed the report.
After their marriage and having Bill and Nena (Manuelita) in those difficult times, Dad (Guillermo) moved to New York in about 1924, following his discharge from the Army, to get work. Mom followed in about 1926 with Bill and Nena in the ship Coamo, named after a town in Puerto Rico. Gualberto, Mom's brother moved to New York prior to about September of 1928 following a bad storm in Puerto Rico that Eduardo remembers. Hector, also a brother moved to New York in about 1943. He sent for and married a childhood sweetheart and neighbor, Haydee Flores Ortiz in New York in about 1945. Haydee Morales Flores told me that Carmen Alicia Castro Gomez (America) was also a neighbor and knew the family since childhood as well. Mom and Dad returned to Puerto Rico in about 1932 on the ship Caracas with four children including Hector and Haydee which were born in New York. They lived in Bayamon. They then lived in(Bus Stop #21) Santurce on Three Brothers Street and near the Presbyterian Church. Santiago lived at Stop 19 and Ramon Martinez Sandoval, Dad's father lived at a higher stop nearby.
Santiago later married Pura Quinonez in about 1938. Following Santiago's death in 1948,
Pura moved to Orlando to live with her daughter, Eleanore La Fond Acevedo, a teacher. Pura died on December 23, 1994 in Orlando.
According to Eduardo Morales and Yolanda Newton Martinez, my sister, Manuela (Mom) had Hazel eyes. I always thought she had light brown eyes. Yvonne, my sister just had an eye exam and always believed she too had brown eyes. The Optometrist told her, she had Hasel eyes and this is how you distinguished the difference. Yvonne has a dark ring on the outer iris, as you move toward the pupil, she has a ring of light gray, followed by brown and then the black pupil. The lighter graymakes the difference and that would account for my memory (not so good) of Mom's eye color. Marieta, her sisterhas the same characteristic. Mom's hair was black until about 45 and her hair tuned to gray in a few years! This is a characteristic that Yolanda and I inherited, but think we earned and won't change it.
