Notes for Martin Mena MORALES Benejám:The following paragraph provided by Jose G. Perez on 2/26/2000:
Don Martín Mena Morales, was born on the 11th of November in 1819 and was baptized on the 21st of November in 1819 in the Catedral de San Juan, Bautismo Libro 10, Folio 166v, Numero N.C.The godparents were Antonio Moreno and María Calderón; witnesses were Luis Vega and Lorenzo García. The Priest was Manuel de Almanza. He was married on the 8th of July in de 1839 in the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Vega Baja to Carmen Seijo Soler. Witnesses of the marriage were don Juan de Torres, don Pedro 2do Prado.
According to Mom, Santiago (his name is Martin if this is correct) was a designer of churches (an Architect). He was also supposed to be the privateer mentioned in Mom's notes as follows: The grandfather of my father, Santiago Morales Saavedra, was Santiago (actually Francisco ) Morales. In Puerto Rico, he was said to be a pirate or buccaneer and was from (Viscaya) Spain. From Spain he went to Venezuela and then to Puerto Rico, where he married and had a family. The government of Spain pursued him and it is said he died by hanging.Luis Sanchez Moraleswanted to write a history about his grandfather and asked my father if he could write it, but my father wasn't in accord with the idea.I don't have any idea who wrote the story. But someone wrote a biography (to follow below) about Luis Sanchez Morales, which should be available in the library. My brother Santiago knows who wrote the story (he is now deceased). My father had six (6) sons and was opposed to the exposure of the story of piracy, because his sons carried the name Morales. Luis Sanchez Morales went by the surname of Sanchez and would not be exposed. Luis Sanchez Morales did not write the story because he didn't want trouble for the sons of Santiago.
Note: In the "1892 - The Spanish American War" chapter, Carmen Alicia Morales comments about the pirate or buccaneer as a myth. This was not excluded from Mother's notes to maintain its integrity for historical purposes. In addition, there is a time continuum, which is not correct. The first, FranciscoMorales came to P. R. in 1752 (?) according to Carmen Alicia Morales and this would have been 4 or 5 generations prior to the Santiago above in the heyday of piracy.
When mother is asked about other stories, names and time periods, Mom says time wasn't related the way it is today. They went by events or periods of importance (epochs). She relates the following about the family and the time period can be deduced more or less.
Martin died in 1903 according to Maria Isabel Parra Roig in March 3, 2000.
