Notes for C
LARENCE ELTON HARKEY:
Never was a man more warm and loving than Clarence Elton Harkey. He truly had a zest for life and worked very hard to provide for his wife and family.
Clarence was the only child born to Benjamin Allen and Amanda Threet Harkey. He was born May 27, 1904 Hopkins County, Texas.
At the young age of 15 months, Clarence's mother died. Upon her death, Clarence and his father, Benjamin, moved into the house with Benjamin's parents, John Jefferson and Mary Epps Harkey. Mary and John still had a large family at home, but were happy to help their son to rear their grandson, Clarence. They lived near Sulphur Springs, Hopkins County, Texas.
When Clarence was 10 years old, his father remarried. Clarence chose to continue living with his grandparents, John and Mary.
After John Jefferson's death in 1915, Clarence, Mary, his grandmother, and Suly May, his spinster aunt, moved into the house with his aunt Lizzie Harkey Hollingsworth family in Hill County. Clarence continued to live there until adulthood. During this time occasionally, he had visits with his father, Benjamin and stepmother, Fannie Mae.
As a young adult Clarence moved to Henderson County. One evening while attending a party, he met a tall dark headed girl named Bertha Opal Pelham. They dated 3 years and married on Oct. 31, 1927.
Clarence was working as a lineman for Texas Power and Light when they married. After a year he and Bertha moved on Bertha's family homestead and began farming. While farming, Clarence and Bertha had four children, Wanda Jean, Viola Faye, Glen Edwin, and Barbara Laverne.
At the beginning of World War II, Clarence left the farm and moved to Houston, Texas to work at the Brown Shipyard. While he was in Houston, Bertha and the children moved in with Amanda
Pelham, Bertha's mother. Amanda had plenty of room because her two sons, Johnnie and Clifford, were in the service. Every weekend Clarence commuted home to visit the family. This was very hard on everyone because the family had never been separated. Throughout this difficult time, Clarence never complained about his long drives to and from Houston.
Following the war, Clarence moved back to Payne Springs and bought a house in the community. He began working as a carpenter in Dallas and continued until his death. He commuted the fifty to sixty miles to work daily.
Clarence was an extremely talented and creative person. Though he only had a formal education to the eighth grade, he stressed the importance of an education with his children. Clarence was very skilled in using his hands. He could draw very well and was a good woodworker. Often he whittled tops and made whistles, jewelry and other toys for his children.

Fishing and hunting were two things that he enjoyed most. He often took the family for outings to the Pelham Lake. The family knew that when he went fishing they would always have fish for dinner. If he did not catch fish, he would stop by the fish market and buy some. The family never knew whether he bought or caught the fish unless Glenn was with him.
Even though Clarence never joined The Methodist Church, he always went with his family. He did much work around the church and took pride in all his work. Wanda, his eldest daughter, recalls, the last visit she had with him, one week prior to his death. He took her and her husband to the church to show them the new pulpit and communion rail that he had built.
Clarence developed pneumonia after having influenza and died on Feb. 14, 1960. At the time of his death he was working toward becoming a member of the Masonic Lodge. The Harkey family lodge membership history goes back several generations.
Clarence Harkey's family is very grateful for the loving guidance that he gave. He continues to be missed and will live on in their hearts forever.
